CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens swimming welcome the reigning Division III champions, Emory, into the Levine Center in search of each squad’s third consecutive victory.
Queens got the results it wanted, as the men’s side came out on top, 156-106, while the women’s team also grabbed a win, 153-109.
The Royals got off to a hot start with victories in the 400-yard medley relay on both sides, earning a quick 9 points for each team.
That was followed up with impressive times in the 1000-freestyle, as Sophie Lange (10:19.33) and Luke Erwee (9:34.14) each won their event by roughly 15 seconds each.
Monica Gumina, who contributed to a top finish in the 400 medley relay, swam the top time in the 200-yard freestyle as well (1:54.18). Daniel Meszaros did the same on the men’s side, contributing to the 400 medley relay victory and taking the top time in the 200 freestyle relay as well (1:39.82).
Alexander Bauch was able to follow up with a victory in the 100-yard backstroke by roughly half a second (50.29), narrowly beating out teammate Andreas Marz (50.98) who took second.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Annika Huber dashed to a first-place time of 1:04.85, her second victory of the day.
Katherine Bailey and Alex Kunert each took the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly, posting times of 2:07.97 and 1:49.94, respectively.
In the 50-yard dashes, Danielle Melilli (23.53) and Matej Dusa (20.13) dominated as they have so far this season.
After the break Melilli earned another victory, this time in the 100-yard freestyle (51.06). Meszaros earned his third victory of the day on the men’s side shortly after (44.83).
Marz followed up those performances with a first-place finish of his own in the 200-yard backstroke (1:49.72).
After Huber took the top spot in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.84), Katherine Bailey and Luke Erwee each earned first-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle with times of 5:07.25 and 4:35.63, respectively.
Gumina and Kunert went on to take first in the 100-yard freestyles before the final individual event of the day, the 200-yard individual medley. Huber dominated as she had all day, finishing first at 2:08.26. Jan Delkeskamp followed suit with a 1:51.75 first-place time.
The day was capped off with each of Queens’ squads earning victories in the 200 freestyle relay. Danielle Melilli, Monica Gumina, Giulia Grasso, and Ayvah Johnson swam to a time of 1:35.17.
Matej Dusa, Alex Kunert, Daniel Meszaros, and Finn Howard took first with a time of 1:21.36.
“After two weekends of racing the team is looking forward fall break. The break gives an opportunity to take what we have learned and make some changes” said head coach Jeff Dugdale.
The men’s side will enjoy a nice break until mid-November, while the women’s side will compete in a quad meet against Vanderbilt, Marshall, and Richmond at home on November 4-5.

The Emory University swimming team was back in the pool for the second consecutive weekend, taking on Queens University of Charlotte at the Levine Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Going up against the reigning Division II national champions, the Royals posted winning scores of 156-106 on the men’s side and 153-109 on the women’s side however, the Eagles collected four events win on the afternoon and saw the first NCAA B Cut turned in of the season.
For the men, Emory recorded two event wins, one NCAA qualifying mark and had a total of 22 top-three finishes. For the Emory women, they notched wins in two events and had 21 top-three efforts.
Sophomore Liyang Sun and graduate transfer Justin Lum highlighted the Emory men as Sun touched first in the 100 Breast at 56.43 while Lum edged out Sun in the 200 Breast, with Lum touching first at 2:03.80 and Sun finishing second at 2:04.49. Freshman Will Kohn registered the first NCAA B Cut of the year for Eagle swimmers as he finished second in the 200 Backstroke with a time of 1:49.81.
Junior Megan Jungers and freshman Emily Noll were event wins for the women with Jungers taking the top spot in the 100 Backstroke with her mark of 57.18, outpacing Noll by .55 seconds. Noll came through in the 200 Backstroke however, besting the rest of the field by nearly three seconds with her winning time of 2:04.10.
On the men’s side, the Eagles saw additional top performers from junior Ryan Gibbons in the 100 Freestyle (2nd, 9:50.86), senior Pat Pema in the 200 Freestyle (2nd, 1:41.69) and 500 Freestyle (2nd, 4:42.09), senior Lawrence Redmond in the 100 Backstroke (3rd, 51.00), sophomore Crow Thorson in the 200 Butterfly (2nd, 1:51.45) and 200 IM (2nd, 1:52.65), junior Nicholas Goudie in both the 50 Free (2nd, 20.94) and 100 Free (3rd, 46.42) and sophomore Jeff Echols in the 100 Butterfly (2nd, 50.01).
For the women, additional top efforts were shown by junior Sloane Donovan in the 1000 Freestyle (2nd, 10:34.12) and 500 Freestyle (3rd, 5:12.94), junior Moshelle Borjigin in the 200 Freestyle (3rd, 1:56.81), senior Anna Glowniak in the 100 Breaststroke (2nd, 1:06.55), senior Allie MacMillan in the 200 Butterfly (2:11.09), graduate student Taylor Leone in the 50 Freestyle (2nd, 24.18) and 100 Butterfly (2nd, 58.57), senior Caroline Maki in the 100 Freestyle (2nd, 53.83), junior Fiona Arwood in the 200 Breaststroke (2nd, 2:26.48) and Noll in the 200 IM (2nd, 2:10.59).
The Eagles added four second place relays at the meet. In the men’s events, the Eagles earned silver in the 400 Medley at 3:23.46 from Sun, Echols, Goudie and senior Ryan Soh and in the 200 Freestyle at 1:23.74 from Goudie, freshman Caden Bjornstad, senior Colin LaFave and sophomore Johnny Bradshaw. For the women, Jungers, Glowniak, Leone and Maki combined for a mark of 3:52.60 in the 400 Medley and in the 200 Freestyle, Maki, Leone and freshmen Claire DePiero and Penny Celtnieks touched in a time of 1:37.14.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, October 22 as Emory hosts Birmingham-Southern at 1:00 PM as part of Swimming & Diving Family Weekend.
