Sweden and Hungary were disqualified from heat 4 of the mixed 4×100 medley relay prelims, both due to false starts.
Legendary breaststroker Daniel Gyurta jumped early for Hungary on the second leg, recording a reaction time of -0.11.
For Sweden it came on the third leg, as butterflier Louise Hansson took off with a -0.06 reaction.
Neither team was really a medal threat in this race, but the Hungarians in particular did have a great shot at making the final. Sweden on the other hand is loaded with talent on the women’s side with Sarah Sjostrom and Michelle Coleman, but is severely lacking on the men’s side with only two breaststrokers and one distance freestyler. As a result, they didn’t utilize either Sjostrom or Coleman this morning.
The U.S. team qualified 1st, setting a new world record in a time of 3:40.28. They’ll be challenged by Australia and Great Britain tonight, as the two have many substitutions to make from this morning’s squad.
Neither of these were false starts. They were early take-offs. You can only false start at the start of the race.
