Hungary Approves Plan to Expedite Aquatics Center Timeline for 2017 Worlds

As a by-product of Budapest, Hungary stepping in as host of the 2017 FINA Aquatic World Championships, the country’s parliament has recently voted to move up the construction on the new state-of-the-art swimming pool slated to host the event.

Hungary originally was awarded the 2021 edition of the world’s biggest non-Olympic swimming event, but was also announced as the 2017 host after Guadalajara, Mexico pulled itself out of hosting duties.  As such, the country is under more of a time crunch to complete their new aquatics center in time for 2017.

Hungary Today reports that the swimming complex’s construction is set to begin in early July and span 16-18 months until completion.  “This almost undivided stand further commits the organising committee. If the swimming pool will be completed in time, the task will be carried out worthily of its magnitude”, commented Tamás Gyárfás, head of the Hungarian Swimming Federation.

Wow, way to go Hungary! In the US we have to use temporary pools with a stadium built around them to stage our Olympic Trials every 4 years (by the way, this is not a criticism of Omaha, which does such a great job hosting the event). It would be nice if the US Government would recognize the historic excellence of our Olympic swimmers and build a natatorium that could host World Championships, Olympic Trials, etc, IMO!
