Huskers Open Season with Intrasquad Meet

Coach Pablo Morales and the Nebraska swimming and diving team made their first appearance of the 2016-17 season with the Scarlet and Cream Intrasquad meet at the Devaney Natatorium on Friday afternoon.

Senior captain Julia Roller and her Cream team racked up 63 points to claim a victory over senior captain Erin Oeltjen and her Scarlet team, which managed 49 points. The Cream earned titles in nine of the 14 events.

This year’s intrasquad featured races in meters instead of yards in honor of the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Team Cream started off the meet by winning the 200-meter medley relay with a squad that consisted of sophomore Lindsay Helferich, junior Jordan Ehly, sophomore Dana Posthuma and Roller.

Sophomore Kaylyn Flatt notched a win for the Scarlet with her victory in the 200-meter freestyle, with freshman Samantha Hedrick claiming second place for the Cream. Flatt recorded two of the Scarlet’s five wins on the day by adding a win in the 400-meter freestyle later in the meet.

Freshman Tori Beeler made her debut by winning the 200-meter IM for the Cream, while Cream teammate Ehly added runner-up honors.

Another freshman, Carla Gonzalez-Garcia, made an impressive debut by racking up a pair of victories. The newcomer from Arlington, Texas, who is a member of the Venezuelan National Team, won both the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter backstroke for the Cream.

All-American Anna Filipcic also added a pair of victories for the Cream by capturing both the one- and three-meter diving events.

Posthuma notched another victory for the Cream in the 100-meter butterfly, while Cream teammate Ehly added a title in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Freshman Allie Worrall tried to keep the Scarlet within striking distance by racing to a win in the 100-meter freestyle. Helferich gave the Cream a second-place showing in the event.

In a pair of special events for the meet, Oeltjen defeated Aimee Fischer to earn a victory for the Scarlet in the in one-meter diving for swimmers competition. Diver Kara Cottrell claimed victory for the Cream in the 50-meter freestyle for divers.

Oeltjen and her Scarlet teammates narrowed the final margin to 63-49 by winning the 400-meter relay, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a victory for the Cream.

The Huskers return home to host the annual Alumni Meet on Saturday, Oct. 1. The start time at Devaney Natatorium is expected to be 9 a.m., ahead of Nebraska’s Homecoming football game with Illinois.
