Ireland won our Swammy Award last year for ‘National Development’ and the country continues to crank out impressive performances. In Hangzhou, Brendan Hyland blasted a new National Record in the men’s 200m butterfly while competing in the heats. The National Centre Dublin athlete produced a monster personal best of 1:53.19, hacking over 3 seconds off of his own previous career-fastest and Irish national standard of 1:56.87.
Hyland’s performance rendered him 10th place overall; out of the final, but happy nonetheless.
Post-race, Hyland stated, “I was pretty excited, I knew I was doing well as I could see a lot of clear water around me, I knew it would be a fast time so when I saw 1:53.1 I was very happy. It’s pretty cool, 10th in the world sounds nice, growing up swimming in Dublin my whole life, to be 10th in the world, to think of where I’ve come from, it’s really good, it’s given me confidence and hopefully I can push on from here.”
Teammate Conor Ferguson also did damage in the heats, registering a time of 52.04 in the heats of the men’s 100m backstroke. His effort wiped out his own previous NR of 52.40 established last year. Ferguson wound up 24th overall after prelims.
