As an encore to his lifetime best in the 400m free from night one, Sam Short fired off a career-quickest outing in the 800m free on day three of the Australian Swimming Championships.
19-year-old Short of Rackley produced a time of 7:42.96 to top the 800m free podium over 6 seconds ahead of the next-closest competitor. Elijah Winnington scored silver in a mark of 7:49.81 while SOSC’s Matthew Galea hit the only other time under 8:00 in 7:58.64 for bronze.
As for Short, the teen’s previous PB entering this competition rested at the 7:48.65 he posted at this same meet last year, so he hacked just under 6 seconds off of that prior best-ever result.
His effort here now ranks him as the 4th fastest Australian swimmer in history.

3’42 , 7’42 untapered is scary… I will not be surprised if he go 3’40 in japan
Pretty clear that his 1500 swim was not his best and just a “go through the motions” kind of swim. The Winnington rivalry might just produce the best that Sam has? Either way, great to see another monster swim from the youngster.
He said he swam 70km last week. No one could swim their best in a 1500 under that kind of training.
I’m not expecting big drops in the 400 or 800 which were clearly full effort, but I agree that his 1500 can absolutely be a lot better.
Not being crazy but 70km weeks would be pretty normal. Some 70km weeks much harder than others though.
Just wait for lorenzo galossi magic
The more the merrier to be honest, strong competition brings out the best in all.
800 as an event is finally becoming competitive and closer than ever!
