Belarus’s Ihar Boki started off the 2021 World Para Swimming European Championships strong, breaking his own S13 World Record in the 100 fly final on day one. He won the event handily, going 53.72 to crack his previous record of 53.85 from 2016.
And then two European Records met their demise during the same session. In the women’s 100 Back S6 final, 18-year-old Nora Meister of Switzerland broke Verena Schott‘s European Record with a time of 1:21.78.
Germany’s Schott finished in 2nd place, also beating her record and touching the wall with a time of 1:22.75. The previous European Record was 1:23.73, set by Schott in April 2021. Meister is now only .35 off the S6 World Record, set by China’s Lingling Song at 1:21.43 in 2016.
The second European Record fell during the women’s 200 IM SM7 final when Italy’s Giulia Terzi won the race with a time of 3:08.12. She crushed the previous record, set at 3:12.82 by Russia’s Oxana Guseva in 2012.
Maksym Krypak of Ukraine came within .20 of his own S10 European Record in the men’s 50 free final, winning the event with a time of 23.53. In the women’s 50 free S11 final, Ukraine’s Maryna Piddubna defended her title with a time of 31.80 but was about 1.58 seconds off her own World Record from 2018.
European Record-holder Dimitrii Cherniaev of Russia won the men’s 100 breast SB4 final with a time of 1:45.84, about 8.5 seconds off his record from 2019.
