Redbird Swim Club’s Andrew Loy has given his verbal commitment to Ohio State for next fall. At last year’s IHSA (Illinois) State Championships, he finished 8th in the 200 free and 21st in the 100 free representing Normal Community West HS.
Bill Wadley has a longstanding, solid swimming program in a top-notch facility. He makes sure his swimmers excel in the pool as well as the classroom and are also prepared to be leaders in life beyond the pool. OSU has an outstanding campus, including Fisher College of business, and every opportunity I could want. I’m thankful all the right doors opened for me to become a Buckeye!
Loy’s Top Times (SCY/LCM)
- 50 free – 21.17/24.17
- 100 free – 46.17/52.27
- 200 free – 1:39.69/1:52.56
- 100 fly – 50.96
Loy’s SCY free bests came at his Illinois sectional meet, which is one of 16 state-wide qualifying meets (based on region) for the State Champs. Had he hit those times again a week later at state, he would have finished 4th in the 200, 8th in the 50, and 9th in the 100. Loy suffered from a respiratory infection at IHSA Champs last year, which kept him from matching or bettering his personal records.
Interestingly enough, while he looks to be a sprint freestyler from his SCY repertoire, he has Winter Juniors cuts in long course in the 200 back (2:09.22) and the 400 IM (4:33.39). OSU might rely on him to branch out and bolster their stroke/IM group, which wasn’t nearly as deep as their free group last year.
Ohio State returns 200 free B1G Champion Josh Fleagle for his senior year, and there will be guys ready to step up and fill the hole left behind by NCAA qualifier Michael DiSalle. The Buckeyes surely aren’t lacking bodies, as their roster currently lists twenty-one freshmen. Loy would’ve made their top ten list in the 200 free last season, and still has another year to hone his free prowess or venture into events like the 200 back and 400 IM.
Loy and Jack Kushner are the two commits to OSU’s class of 2020.
