Champaign, Ill. – The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team dominated from start to finish on Saturday, November 5, on its way to a 184-77 win over Indiana State. With the victory, the Illini move to 6-1 on the season.

“It was nice to get a win on the road,” said head coach Sue Novitsky. “Indiana State competed really well and has a very strong future as a program. I was pleased to see the team step up and compete in some different events. We trained hard this week and they were pretty tired and sore, but overall they were able to ignore their discomfort and get to the next wall.”

There were no weak spots for Illinois, as the team earned first-place finishes in 13 of the 14 events. The relay team of Kolar, Serniute, Vuong and Anderson got things started for the Illini, finishing first in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:55.34. Freshman Emily Martinfollowed up that performance with a strong showing in the 1000 freestyle, touching the wall first in a time of 10:33.74.

Four different Illini swimmers won multiple events on the day, including senior Amelia Schilling, senior Audrey Rodawig, junior Ashley Aegerter and sophomore Gabriele Serniute.

Schilling finished first in the 100 freestyle and 400 IM with times of 52.92 and 4:30.55, respectively. In the third event of the meet, the 200 freestyle, Rodawig touched the wall first in a time of 1:53.65. The Champaign native also earned a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:06.83).

Junior Ashley Aegerter swam strong in the 200 butterfly, finishing first in a time of 2:09.48. Aegerter also touched the wall first in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:22.09. Sophomore Gabriele Serniute won both the 100 breaststroke (1:06.13) and 100 butterfly (58.59).

Other first-place finishes included redshirt Freshman Aby Olson in the 100 backstroke (59.30), sophomore Megan Vuong in the 50 freestyle (24.11) and the relay team of Bethke, Meyers, Anderson and Rodawig in the 400 freestyle relay (3:34.41).

Terre Haute, Ind.—The Indiana State Sycamores welcomed the University of Illinois Fighting Illini today for their second home meet.

Despite falling to the Illini by a final score of 184 to 77 the Sycamores continue to improve every single week that they compete. This week Indiana State set eight out of 14 new school records.

“Our dual meet lineup today was a little bit different from what we would normally go with just so we can get some more experience and that’s kind of been the name of the game for our program. We’re really trying to get our student-athletes experience and if you swam the same events every meet there is hard to see much change,” said head coach Matt Leach.

The Sycamores continue to fill most of the second place finishes throughout the events. Coach Leach stated that, “throughout the meet there were events where we did a great job and then there were events where we were timid on the way out and not getting into the race soon enough.”

Indiana State has been taking on tough competition all year long, however the Sycamores have handled it well. They have so far faced off with Notre Dame, Missouri Valley Conference Rival Illinois State, competed against eight other universities at the Indiana Intercollegiates, and now have taken on Big Ten Conference competition the University of Illinois.

“The 400 Med Relay, Illinois came out and they swam strong, just like any Big Ten team would.”

Many Sycamores had impressive performances today setting new personal records and team records as well.

Cierra Campbell and Elisabeth Peskin did a great job of competing and swimming a solid race and put us in competition to get to that wall first. In the 200 free we did the same thing. Blanca Saez-Illobre had a great race but was just a little bit outgunned by Illinois.”

In the 50 frees the Sycamores set some new personal best times as well as another new team record. Alex Malmborg finished in third place with a time of 24.82.

Overall the Sycamores improved drastically in the first half of the meet than how they swam last week against the Illinois State Redbirds.

“After the first break Courtney Skelley came in and continued to do what she’s been doing in training. She’s working really hard and set another team record. Then we had a great first win in the 200 backstroke from Kendall Hansen. She has been swimming really well in that event and we are going to keep her going with that.”

Coach Leach there is some technical stuff that his swimmers need to continue to work on, but feels that the improvement in such a short time has been outstanding.

“This was a very successful day. Out of the large amounts of events we set numerous new team records. We are continuing to move in the right direction and are looking forward to making these changes permanent as we move closer to conference.”

Indiana State is back in action on Nov. 12 at the Vigo County Aquatic Center to face off with Evansville and Rose-Hulman. This weekend will also be serving as the swimming and diving reunion weekend as we welcome back former men’s and women’s swimmers from the 1960’s and 1970’s programs.
