Illinois’ Katie Wells Verbally Commits to University of Iowa

Glenview, Illinois native Katie Wells has made a verbal commitment to swim at the University of Iowa beginning with the 2015-16 season. Wells is a versatile talent who can do just about anything and fit in as needed. Swimming for Glenbrook South High School at last November’s Illinois High School Association State Meet, Wells went 23.27 for a fourth in the 50 free, and 1:03.96 for fifth in the 100 breast.

Wells also swims for Glenview Titan Aquatic Club. Her top times over the last two years are:

50y free: 23.26
100y free: 51.89
50y breast: 30.11
100y breast: 1:03.27
50y back: 26.82
100y back: 56.71
200y back: 2:06.13
100y fly: 57.62

Wells had a slightly stagnant long course season in 2014 but in short course, she improved her 100 breast by four seconds from sophomore to junior year.

At B1G Championships, they swim three finals but score two. Wells would be right there, or very close to picking up a second swim in the 50 free, 100 breast, and 100 back.

Wells is a nice addition to Coach Marc Long’s lineup. Already her 50 free and 100 breast times would land solidly on the Hawkeyes’ all-time top ten list.

“I had a lot of help during the entire process. I have so many family friends who went to Iowa, one of them wrestled there. They told me all about how much they loved it there, and it really made me excited about Iowa being one of my choices. I also got a lot of help from Daniela Cubelic who swam and graduated from there a few years ago. They told me all the little things they really loved, and that added up to me eventually making my decision.

I absolutely loved it on my trip, which is only to be expected. The feeling I got when I walked around the campus was absolutely incredible. The coaches were so friendly and caring on my trip that I kind of felt like I was on the team already. It felt like they had already been my coaches for multiple years. I can already tell that they’re going to help me reach my full potential during my years there. The team was so close, both the men and the women, and that was really something I was looking for. Those things, added with the absolutely incredible facilities helped me make my decision.”

“All and all, I’m super excited to become a Hawkeye, and I absolutely cannot wait to see what I can accomplish there.”
