Illinois Tops Big 10 Rival Iowa in Champaign

The University of Illinois welcomed Big 10 rival Iowa to Champaign on Saturday and emerged victorious, 204 to 87. 

The Illini were led by senior Abby Cabush, who won both of her individual events on the day. In the 200 free, Cabush was dominant, winning by over four and a half seconds with a 1:50.28, about two and a half seconds off of her season and lifetime best of 1:47.71 from the House of Champions Invite in November. The Sussex, Wisconsin native later returned to win the 100 fly in a new lifetime best of 56.44.

Also winning two events for Illinois was freshman Sydney Stoll. The Hartland, Wisconsin native’s first win of the day came in the 200 back, where she posted a 2:06.28 to win by nearly 2 seconds. She later returned to win the 200 IM in 2:08.05, finishing just ahead of teammate Cara Bognar, who finished in second in 2:08.82. Stoll also swam the 200 free, where she finished as the runner-up to Cabush. Stoll’s season bests sit at 2:00.77 in the 200 back, 2:04.76 in the 200 IM and 1:50.84 in the 200 free. 

Leading the way for Iowa was junior Kennedy Gilbertson, who won two events on the day. The Plover, Wisconsin native dominated the 100 back, posting season-best-tying 56.61 to win by over two seconds. At last season’s Big 10 Championships, Gilbertson was a C finalist in the 100 back, where she finished 18th with a lifetime best of 53.92. She later returned to win the 100 free in 52.66, off of her season best of 51.28 from the Iowa-Iowa State dual meet in December. 

The Hawkeye divers were also dominant against the Illini, with sophomore Sarah Ballard sweeping both the 1 and 3 meter events. The Fishers, Indiana native won the 1 meter, an event that she scored in at the Big 10 Championships a season ago, with a score of 306.30 and also won the 3 meter with a 294.15.

The Hawkeyes will return to the pool on January 28th when they travel to Minneapolis for a Big 10 tri against Minnesota and Northwestern, while Illinois will host Nebraska this Saturday for their final home meet of the year.
