Ilya Kharun Clocks 49.03 SCM 100 Fly To Break World Junior Record

In the finals of the men’s 100 fly at the 2022 Short Course World Championships, 17-year-old Canadian swimmer Ilya Kharun took silver with a time of 49.03, breaking the world junior record in the event. The previous world junior record was set by China’s Li Zhuhao, who swam a 49.53 at one of the 2017 FINA World Cup stops.

Kharun’s 49.03 also makes him the seventh-fastest overall performer of all time in the men’s short course 100-meter fly.

At the 75-meter mark of the race, Kharun was actually in last place. However, he split 13.05 on his final 25, which was the fastest closing split out of the entire field. He outpaced Li’s old world junior record time on both the front and back halves of the race.

Comparative Splits:

The 100 fly marks Kharun’s second world junior record of this short course worlds meet, as he previously broke the 50 fly world junior record twice—once in prelims and once in semi-finals. Then, a swim-off for a finals spot that he ultimately lost to Daniel Zaitsev, he matched his semi-finals time of 22.28 to tie the world junior record.

Kharun is racing in his first international meet as a Canadian swimmer. He trains in the United States with the Sandpipers of Nevada and was set to represent the U.S. at the 2022 Junior Pan Pac Championships, but was ultimately removed from the Junior Pan Pacs team amid citizenship confusion after it was revealed that he was born in Canada.
