Emily Seebohm’s 2011 season has been derailed once again by illness. After a bout with swine flu that left her out of all but one race at the 2011 Australian World Championship Trials (the 100 backstroke, where she finished 2nd and then collapsed), Emily Seebohm needed all of her focus to be ready for Shanghai.
Yet the versatile Australian backstroker, who as recently as last year was on track to become one of the legends of the sport, has taken another hit to her chances at World’s, after being hospitalized in Brisbane with an unknown stomach illness.
As of this writing, it’s still a mystery what’s wrong with her, but she is expected to undergo an endoscopy today. Initial reports speculated that she contracted something while touring the US and competing both at the Southwest Classic in Arizona as well as the Santa Clara Grand Prix.
(The Australians also spent time in Mexico before coming stateside, which seems as a more likely candidate to me.)
There goes Australia hope to medal in 4×100 free and gold in 4×100 medley
she seems to be taking the natalie coughlin course of events… anyone remember worlds in ’03?
she’s going to be tough to handle next year in London if she is healthy!
