Maggie Meyer – the 2011 NCAA Champion in the 200 back and a 2009-2010 USA National Teamer – has joined her former Wisconsin coach Eric Hansen in Tucson in a move that shouldn’t surprise many. Hansen was recently named the head coach of the University of Arizona as a replacement to new USA Swimming National Team Director Frank Busch, and coached Meyer throughout all 4 of her college seasons.
Meyer won the 200 back NCAA title in Austin in March in 1:50.76 after a gutsy performance where she went out more than a second-and-a-half faster than the rest of the field, and held off an incredible late charge from Missouri’s Dominique Bouchard. She also placed 4th in the 100 back.
Meyer’s top finish at the 2010 ConocoPhillips National Championships was a 9th (2:13.10) in the 200 back. This is a move that would’ve made sense for Meyer regardless of Hansen’s, but his decision to take the post in Tucson made it an even easier decision. She will make her debut this weekend at the Arizona Invitational just north in Tempe.
