Indian River Men and Women Lead After Day 1 NJCAA Championships

2016 NJCAA Swimming & Diving Championships

This year the NJCAA championships implemented 5 new events; the 50 fly, 50 breast, 50 back, 100 IM and 1000 free and now have a full 4-day meet schedule. The Indian River women are 34 time and their male teammates are 41 time defending champions, and lead the way on day 1 of the 2016 championships.

Women 50 Breast

  3. AnnMarie Spiker 31.19

Indian started the meet with a 1-2 sweep in the 50 breast, when Loh took more than a second off of her prelims swim to set the meet record in the event, her teammate Meyrick was just behind her followed by Spiker from Iowa Central.

Men 50 Breast

  3. Mitchell Graham Andrew Wojcik 25.76

Like the women, the Indian River men also had a sweep in the 50 breast, but this time it was 1-2-3. Emslie lead the way, winning by almost a second, setting the record in the new event, followed by his teammate Ankerholz, who out touched 3rd place finishers; Graham of South Georgia State College and Wojcik of Indian River.

Women 1000 Free

  1. Tamara Miler 10:05.15
  2. Olivia Jacobi 10:24.07
  3. Madisyn Lyons 10:31.85

The next event was also a new event to the meet, and Miler of Monroe; 2015 NJCAA 500 free and 1650 free champion, was the won to get the victory and meet record after dominating the event, finishing in almost 10 seconds ahead of 2nd place finisher; Jacobi of IRSC, who was runner up in the 500 free at last years championships.

Men 1000 Free

  1. Jason Van Der Touw 9:14.36
  2. Matt Nielsen 9:21.17
  3. Alexander Berggren 9:42.29

The men of IRSC posted another 1-2-3 sweep for the night, with new comer Van Der Touw leading the way and capturing the meet record. Nielsen, who won both the 500 free and 1650 free at last years championships, now has some tough competition in the distance events now that Van Der Touw has set the tone.

Women 200 IM

  1. Christina Loh 2:04.84
  2. Morgan Holt 2:09.71
  3. Grace Lynch 2:11.23

Oh took her 2nd victory of the night when she touched the pads in the 200 IM in 2:04.84, she improved on her time as well as position from last years championships, where she touched 2nd in 2:06.57. Her teammates Holt and Lynch came in behind her to give IRSC another 1-2-3 sweep of the night.

Men 200 IM

  3. Cameron Newton 1:51.43

Emily took his 2nd victory of the night, winning the 200 IM and just missing the 18-year old record of 1:47.68 done by Indian River alum Marcin Malinski in 1998. His teammates; sophomore Davis and freshman Newton and 4th place finisher Wojcik (1:52.10), also garnered valuable points for IRSC in this event.

Women 50 Free

  2. Yasmine Ware 23.59
  3. Leah Sims 23.97

IRSC showed their sprint strength with a 1-2-3 sweep in the 50, with all podium finishers breaking the 24 second barrier. The freshman McReen and Ware made an impressive debut at the 2016 NJCAA championships and Sims, who finished 3rd at last years championships (24.36), improved her time this year but settled for 3rd.

  3. John Fauteux & Thomas Reams 20.69

The men of IRSC finished the last individual event of the night with another 1-2-3 sweep, taking all top 3 spots of the night. The mens 50 free was definitely a race to the finish with a little more than 0.20 seconds separating the top 4 finishers. At the finish it was Erdmann who got the title, and 2015 champion Hartley, who was runner up. Fauteux of IRSC and Reams of Southwestern Oregon tied for 3rd in 20.69; the exact same time that got 3rd place last year.

Women 200 Medley Relay

  1. IRSC 1:41.18
  2. SGSC 1:52.29
  3. Iowa Central 1:52.98

The women IRSC A really; Tayla Lovemore (24.93), Loh (28.33), Ware (25.19) and McReed (22.73), dominated the 200 medley relay, finishing in more than 10 seconds ahead of 2nd place finishers; SGSC. Lovemore posted an impressive 50 back time, giving the team a huge lead and finishing in a new meet record in the 50 back event.  Their final time was a new meet record, breaking the old record of 1:42.09, done in 2015.

With an impressive night of individual events, it was no surprise when IRSC A team of; Jairo Emer (22.91), Emslie (23.75), Nicholas Loomis (21.21) and Erdmann (19.66) touched first in the 200 medley relay. Emer set the tone for his team, giving his teammates more than a 1 second lead and setting the meet record in the 50 back.
