Indiana HS State Champion Walker Mattice Announces his Commitment to Purdue University (2024)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Indiana High School State Champion Walker Mattice is set to arrive at Purdue University this fall to continue his studies and swim for the Boilermakers. Mattice currently trains with the Zionsville Swim Club, about an hour away from Purdue, and attends Zionsville Community High School.

“I am extremely excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic careers at Purdue University. I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches that helped me along the way. Boiler Up! 🚂🚂🚂”

Mattice was a two-time finalist at the Indiana High School State Championship (SCY) in 2023, placing 2nd in the 200 free (1:38.25) and 3rd in the 100 free (45.46). Two weeks later, he became a four-time finalist at the Indiana Senior State Championship (SCY) where he secured 3rd in the 200 IM (1:51.23), 3rd in the 200 back (1:48.72), 6th in the 500 free (4:36.22), and 8th in 100 fly (51.15). His times in the 200 IM and 200 back, as well as his prelims time of 50.97 in the 100 fly, were all lifetime bests.

Mattice dominated at the Indiana High School State Championship this year, becoming a two-time champion in the 100 free (44.26) and the 200 free (1:36.86), both of which were personal bests. His performance in the 200 free was nearly two seconds faster than the second-place finisher, Lewis Zhang, who clocked 1:38.84. Mattice also received the Mental Attitude Award at the meet.

More recently, at the Indiana Senior State Championships (LCM) in March, Mattice secured 1st in the 100 free with a best time of 52.27. He also achieved top-five finishes in four other events: 3rd in the 200 IM (2:11.65), 3rd in the 400 free (4:11.86), 4th in the 200 back (2:09.24), and 5th in the 50 free (24.27). His performance in the 400 free was a personal best.

Top SCY Times

  • 100 free – 44.26
  • 200 free – 1:36.77
  • 500 free – 4:31.80
  • 100 back – 50.93
  • 200 back – 1:48.72
  • 200 IM – 1:51.23

Although Mattice’s best time in the 200 free would have ranked 4th this season for the Boilermakers, he is less than a second away from the top time held by senior Ethan Shaw (1:35.81). The second and third top times are held by upperclassmen Brady Samuels and Connor McCarthy as well, making Mattice’s arrival timely.

Purdue finished 8th this season at the Big Ten Championships under head coach Alex Jerden. Even though they placed higher at 6th overall the previous year, sophomore Dylan Burau set a new school record in the 200 back with a time of 1:41.93 at the championships. Additionally, other swimmers achieved top-10 program times, such as Shaw’s 500 free time of 4:19.62, which is the second-fastest in the program’s history.

Mattice is set to join Purdue’s recruiting class of 2024 alongside Charles Lee, Evan Mackesy, Blake Rowe, Gage Johnson, William Jost, and Dominic Mazurek. Many of them were also High School State Champions, including Mackesy for Maryland, Johnson for Arkansas, Jost for Missouri, and Mazurek for Illinois.
