The IU Hoosiers nabbed three of the Big Ten’s six weekly swimming and diving honors for November 4th after big wins at the Tennessee triangular.
Sophomore Anze Tavcar was a key piece in those dominating wins, taking three individual races against Tennessee and Kentucky. He won the 50 (20.10), 100 (43.69) and 200 (1:36.08) freestyles in bruising fashion for the Hoosiers. His 200 free vaulted him to the top of the NCAA ranks for this season, and his 100 free time checks in at #2 in the nation. He was named Male Swimmer of the Week.
Meanwhile Michael Hixon won his second-consecutive Diver of the Week Award on the men’s side. Getting comfortable with his new program, the sophomore transfer once again swept the diving events. He cracked 400 points in both events to help IU knock off the Vols and Wildcats.
Kennedy Goss grabbed an award for the IU women, earning her second Freshman of the Week honor in the last four weeks. She pulled a similar schedule to Tavcar, just up one step in distances. Goss won the 100 (49.86), 200 (1:46.45) and 500 (4:48.83) frees for Indiana, and ranks as high as 4th in the nation with her 200 free.
The overall Female Swimmer of the Week award went to Iowa’s Emma Sougstad, who swept the breaststrokes in Iowa’s meet against Minnesota. Sougstad was a part of 3 of Iowa’s 4 event wins, and earns her first career Swimmer of the Week award. Iowa also earned Male Freshman of the Week with Jerzy Twarowski. The Polish first-year swept the butterfly races as the Iowa men also battled Minnesota on the road. Twarowski put up times of 48.65 in the 100 and 1:47.55 in the 200.
Purdue also got in on the action, earning Female Diver of the Week. Mary Beth Dunnichay took that honor after winning the 1-meter against Notre Dame. Dunnichay was also second on 3-meter, and hit NCAA Zone qualifying standards in both events.
IU is in contention for the Big 10 title this season. It won’t be a Michigan runaway. Tavcar currently No. 2 in the 100 free.
