Indiana Scores Israeli National Record-holder Tomer Frankel for 2020-21

Israel’s Tomer Frankel has announced via social media that he plans to swim at Indiana University beginning next fall. The 19-year-old is a member of the club team Hapoel Jerusalem and represents Israel internationally. Frankel has already achieved the Olympic cut in the 100 fly (51.92 from Amsterdam Cup) and has also qualified as a member of two Israeli relay teams who made cuts: men’s 4×200 free and mixed 4×100 medley. Frankel currently swims at the Israeli Swimming Association Academy at Netanya. He spent time with Team Elite at San Diego as a part of the Israeli program with David Marsh, a special advisor to the Israeli Association.

Frankel currently holds national records in the:

• LCM 200 free – 1:47.16
• LCM 100 fly – 51.92
• LCM men’s 4×200 free –split of 1:47.95
• LCM mixed 4×50 medley – fly split of 52.26
• SCM 200 free – 1:43.50
• SCM 400 free – 3:42.86
• SCM 100 fly – 50.60
• SCM men’s 4×50 free – split of 21.99

Frankel swam under the Israel flag at 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea last summer. He competed individually in the 100 fly and qualified for semi-finals, finishing 14th. He also swam in the men’s 4×100 free, 4×200 free, and 4×100 medley, and the mixed 4×100 free and 4×100 medley.

He won the 100 free by .01 over Andrei Minakov (49.23 to 49.24) at LEN European Junior Swimming Championships in Helsinki in 2018. He also anchored the winning men’s 4×200 free (1:47.74), finished 4th in the 200m free (1:49.04) and 50m fly (23.79) and contributed to the 4th-place men’s 4×100 free (49.91 leadoff) and mixed 4×100 free (49.27 split).

Best times converted to SCY:

• 200 free – 1:33.24
• 400/500 – 4:14.69
• 50 fly – 20.80
• 100 fly – 45.51
• 200 fly – 1:42.45

Frankel’s best times, converted to SCY, are already NCAA-ready. He would have scored in the B final of the 100 fly at last year’s NCAA Division I Men’s Championships and would have been just a tick outside range in the 200/500 free and 200 fly. It took 1:32.93/4:14.47 to get a second swim in the freestyles and 1:41.77 in the 200 fly.

Frankel will suit up next fall with fellow class of 2024 commits Gavin Wight, Jassen Yep, Mac Boyle, Maxwell Reich, and Tristan DeWitt. He will have a ready-made training group with flyers Bruno Blaskovic, Brendan Burns, and Van Mathias and freestylers Blaskovic, Jack Franzman, Brandon Hamblin, Jakub Karl, and Mikey Calvillo, all of whom scored in the A or B final of their respective events at B1Gs.
