Indiana State Tops Illinois State, 205-94, On Senior Day

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State closed out the regular season on Friday night with a 205-94 win over Illinois State as the Sycamores topped the Redbirds at the Vigo County Aquatic Center. The Sycamores claimed 12 wins over the 16 events on the evening to claim their ninth dual meet win of the season.

The Sycamores set three new school records and tied another as Indiana State closed out their final meet before the 2024 Missouri Valley Conference Championships held over February 21-24 in Evansville, Ind. Claire Parsons (1000-Free), Ali Pearson (100-Breast), Kaleigh Kelley (100-Fly) all set or tied individual marks in the field, while the ISU 200-yard Medley Relay team set a new record in their fourth consecutive win over the Redbirds.

Indiana State started off the meet setting a new school record in the 200-yard Medley Relay as Alexandria Cotter, Ali Pearson, Kaleigh Kelley, and Chloe Farro touched the wall in 1:41.04 breaking the previous mark set last year at the MVC Championships (1:41.29). The quartet of Trista BullockKaimi MatsumotoRaine Boles, and Alexa Szadorski finished third in 1:42.52, while the final group of Kate ReevesDorotea BukvicRaz Harel, and Kalli Agapios finished fifth in 1:46.02.

Claire Parsons broke her own mark in the 1000-yard Freestyle as the freshman became the first ISU swimmer to go sub-10 minutes in winning the event in 9:58.88. Esther Rydbeck Norden (10:09.29) and Rose Parsons (10:10.61) finished second and third respectively in the field for ISU.

Erin Cummins paced the Sycamores in the 200-yard Freestyle to claim ISU’s third win of the meet in touching the wall in 1:50.20 to win by 1.24 seconds. Peyton Heagy finished fourth in 1:51.91, while Jordan Gruce (1:52.72) and Trista Bullock (1:53.84) also finished in the top six in the field. Kamila Nowak added a top-10 finish touching the wall in 1:55.80.

Olivia DiRuzza (56.34) and Alexandria Cotter (56.83) finished second and third in the field to lead the Sycamores in the 100-yard Backstroke event. Kate Reeves (57.57) and Ella Moustgaard (58.18) finished fifth and sixth overall in the field to round out the Sycamores.

Pearson (1:01.95) set a new ISU record in the 100-yard Breaststroke to break the previous mark set by Kaimi Matsumoto (1:02.54) last season at the MVC Championships. Pearson finished second in the field to lead three Sycamores in the top-four overall with Szadorski (1:02.71) and Matsumoto (1:03.22) rounding out ISU in the field.

Haley Halsall led Indiana State in the 200-yard Butterfly with a time of 2:01.19, while Raz Harel finished second in 2:04.48 to pace the Sycamores in the event. Rebecca Shaffer (2:07.83) and Raine Boles (2:13.22) both posted top-six finishes overall.
Farro was ISU’s top finisher in the 50-yard Freestyle as the junior was just off her record pace in the event with a time of 23.23. Kelley (23.55) finished third overall, while Allie Barasch (24.24), Agapios (24.25), and Ash Saple (24.49) finished in the top-seven in the field.

Bailey Betzer took home the first win of the day in the 3M diving event with a score of 277.35. Zoe Smith finished second overall totaling 270.98 over her six dives, while Daniela Orta Castaneda (232.50) and Sierra Bowman (230.63) both finished inside the top-five. Brenna Woodruff rounded out the group in 169.13 taking seventh in the field.

Farro took home her second win of the meet in the 100-yard Freestyle event as the junior took the event in 50.43 to win by .14 seconds. Szadorski finished third overall in the field in 50.59, while Gruce (52.48) and Heagy (52.55) touched the wall in fifth and sixth overall in the field. Saple finished eighth overall in 53.24.

DiRuzza was runner-up in the 200-yard Backstroke to lead five Sycamores in the field. The junior touched the wall in 2:02.37, while Reeves (2:04.10), Agapios (2:05.24), and Moustgaard (2:06.14) finished inside the top-five. Bullock rounded out the group in 2:07.44 taking seventh overall.

Bukvic claimed the 200-yard Breaststroke title as the junior touched the wall in 2:14.36 to claim the win by 2.37 seconds over Matsumoto (2:16.73). Pearson was also in the top-three finishing in 2:17.12.

Claire Parsons (4:54.03), Cummins (4:56.31), and Halsall (4:57.11) took the top three spots in the 500-yard Freestyle event to lead the Sycamores in the field. Rydbeck Norden was fifth in 5:00.06, while Rose Parsons (5:05.91) and Kamila Nowak (5:12.29) also took home top-10 finishes.

Kelley tied Marni Gray’s school record in the 100-yard Fly as the freshman touched the wall in 53.91 equaling the mark of the Sycamore alum set last season at the MVC Championships. Harel (56.22) took second in the field, while Shaffer (57.96) and Boles (1:00.06) also posted top-eight results.

Smith was ISU’s top finisher in the 1M Diving event with a six-dive total of 267.60, while Betzer (256.95), Orta Castaneda (210.75) and Bowman (194.33) all finished inside the top-five. Woodruff rounded out the divers with a score of 164.55.

The Sycamores took the top three positions in the 200-yard IM with Cotter (2:02.30), Bukvic (2:02.51) and Pearson (2:07.61) leading ISU to winning the event.

ISU closed out the night taking the title in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay with Farro, Kelley, Matsumoto, and Szadorski touching the wall in 3:23.09 to take the win. Cummins, Heagy, Claire Parsons, and Agapios finished third overall in 3:28.09, while Gruce, Bullock, Reeves, and Harel finished fifth in the field in 3:33.78.

ISU honored the 2023-24 senior class in a pre-meet ceremony as the Sycamores recognized Bailey BetzerSierra BowmanJordan GruceEsther Rydbeck NordenKaimi Matsumoto, and Makayla Sura, prior to the start of the competition.

TERRE HAUTE, IN – Four Redbirds earned wins as Illinois State Swimming and Diving capped off its regular season Friday night against Indiana State at the Vigo County Aquatic Center in Terre Haute, Ind.

The Sycamores took the dual meet by a score of 205.94.

HIGHLIGHTS: 

  • Chloe Tyler earned the first win of the night for Illinois State, going 56.24 in the 100y Backstroke. It was her first short course win of the season. Overall, it was her third win of the season, after she earned victories in the 50M Back (30.83) and 100M Back (1:06.78) Oct. 14 in long course action at Ohio.

  • Madyson Morse earned a win in the 100y Breaststroke turning in a mark of 1:01.90. She’ll look to defend her MVC title in that event at this month’s MVC Swimming and Diving Championships.

  • Cassidy Carey took home the 200y Backstroke with a mark of 2:00.19 that was a season best and nearly brought down her school record of 2:00.16. It was her fifth win of the season and her third in the 200y Backstroke.

  • On the boards, Eva Reyes secured her fourth 3M win of the season, turning in a score of 288.23.
