CHICAGO, Ill. – Indiana State topped the field in a dominant display on the final day of the Valley Showcase as the Sycamores topped Illinois State, Northern Iowa, and Illinois Chicago in the first matchup between the teams in the 2022-23 season.
The Sycamores built off their day one lead on the way to totaling 913 points over the weekend. Indiana State took 15 of the 20 heats on Friday night at the Flames Natatorium and added 10 more wins on Saturday on their way to the Showcase win.
With the meet being scored like the conference meet with an A-Final (1-8) and a B-Final (9-16) in each event, the Sycamores dominated the showing with 10 more heat wins on Saturday afternoon.
Overall, ISU’s 913 points put the Sycamores ahead of Illinois State (742) for the team title. Northern Iowa (734) placed third overall in the field, while host UIC (679) rounded out the competition field.
“This was a strong weekend for us,” head coach Josh Christensen said. “Energy was high throughout and we did a great job competing all the way through the meet. Our depth and versatility really showed up.”
ISU started off the final day of competition with a pair of wins in both heats of the 200-yard Medley Relay. The top team of Carmen Alard Vegas, Kaimi Matsumoto, Marni Gray, and Chloe Farro took the A-Final by a full-second with a time of 1:44.47. The team of Madie Rutan, Elle Gilkerson, Raine Boles, and Alexa Szadorski added a win in the B-Final with a time of 1:46.25.
Andrea Putrimas made it two-for-two on the weekend in the distance freestyle events as the senior won the event by nearly two seconds. Her time of 5:06.68 put her first in the field in the A-Final, while Esther Rydbeck Norden finished seventh in 5:14.22. Jordan Gruce (5:12.58, 10th) and Rhiannon Wozny (5:14.88, 12th) finished in the top four in the B-Final to add to the Sycamore point totals.
Dorotea Bukvic gave the Sycamores their third win of the day as the sophomore won the 200-yard Breastroke event by nearly three seconds with her time of 2:21.03. Gilkerson touched the wall fourth in the top final with a time of 2:25.48. Alexandria Cotter (2:25.60, 9th) took the win in the B-Final, while Makayla Sura touched in 2:33.82 to finish 14th overall in the event.
Rutan (2:03.71, 2nd) and Alard Vegas (2:04.96, 3rd) both finished in the top three in the 200-yard Backstroke to put two more Sycamores among the event leaders. Kalli Agapios (2:04.75, 9th) and Olivia Diruzza (2:05.01, 10th) went 1-2 in the B-Final.
Zoe Smith was again the Sycamore leader in the 1-Meter Diving event with a score of 243.90 putting her fourth in the field. Bailey Betzer was eighth with a score of 199.55. Daniela Orta Castaneda (197.45, 14th) and Sierra Bowman (193.25, 15th) battled their way in the B-Final on the afternoon.
Farro (52.26, 2nd) and Peyton Heagy (52.86, 4th) were in the top-four in the 100-yard Freestyle event to add to the Sycamore point totals. Matsumoto (53.36, 10th) and Agapios (54.15, 14th) battled their way in the B-Final with Matsumoto finishing .05 behind UIC’s Bree Moericke for the heat win.
Gray (2:08.25, 2nd) and Katie Dougherty (2:09.16, 4th) were Indiana State’s leaders in the 200-yard Butterfly event on the afternoon. Molly Fogarty (2:09.31, 9th) added a heat win in the B-Final, while Colleen O’Connor touched the wall in 2:11.77 to finish 11th overall in the field.
Alexandria Cotter completed the sweep in the individual medley events as the sophomore touched the wall in 2:07.81 to take the A-Final win. Alard Vegas touched the wall in 2:09.90 to finish fourth in the field. Szadorski completed the heat sweep with a time of 2:08.50 to win the B-Final by nearly three seconds, while Bukvic finished second in the heat and 10th overall with a time of 2:11.45.
“This is a long season and we’re still early in the year,” Christensen said. “We did so many things well this weekend, but we also have lots of places where we can keep getting better. I’m excited to see us keep growing from here.”
