Indiana University Coaches Race 200 Free Before Big-10’s

Three of Indiana’s coaches, John Long, Cory Chitwood, and Delia Weber, raced in a 200 free as the school’s team preps for the Big-10 Championships over the next two weeks. The swim came following a deal made with Blake Pieroni last fall that, if he swam below a 1:33.3 in the 200 free at Indiana’s Pro Race Day, the assistant coaches would have to race the event themselves.

All three of the coaches who took part in the race were high-level NCAA Division 1 and 2 athletes. Of the three, Chitwood had the most impressive collegiate career, winning the Division 1 NCAA championship in the 200 back three times and qualifying for the U.S. National Team in 2011 and 2012. John Long was a multiple-event Division 2 finalist in the sprint freestyle races while swimming at Queen’s University. Weber was a CCSA champion in the 1650 for Liberty University.

The fastest of the three coaches was Chitwood, who touched in 1:42.0, with Long just behind him in 1:43.6. Long went out fast in the race, flipping at 48.2 at the 100, but was run down by Chitwood over the final 50 of the race. Weber finished in 1:53.07, just over two seconds off her lifetime best of 1:50.83 from 2015.

Splits:

Chitwood

  • 23.1
  • 25.4
  • 26.7
  • 26.8
  • Total Time: 1:42.0

Long

  • 22.6

  • 28.5
  • Total Time: 1:43.6

Weber

  • 29.3
  • 30.1
  • Total Time: 1:53.07

Indiana is currently preparing for the Big Ten Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships which are set to kick off later this week at the University of Minnesota and the men’s meet which will be held a week later at Ohio State University. SwimSwam has the women predicted to finish in 4th, behind Ohio State, Michigan, and Northwestern.

I just went on the IU website to look these coaches up and they have 20 people listed as staff. Many are student managers, but still, that’s a lot of people supporting the team.

Guess from far away based on a feel: Sub 1:45 after a ten week program. Substantially slower before it.

Ray is 53 going on 54 this year and the Master’s record for 50-54 200 free is a 1:43.7. No way he goes sub 1:45

I think Ray’s competitive swimming days might be at an end. He has a lot of feet, knee and back pain from his tireless work of being the GOAT Coach of the pool deck.

@Steve Nolan: regarding your joke concerning yesterday’s NCAA rules changes:

The head of the German Air Force during World War II had an estranged daughter named Lin who kept trying to give him advice. Things got so bad that he finally told his colleagues to put this sign outside his office to keep her away:

NO LIN GOERING

Wow those are pretty decent times, are they in the water often? It’d be SUPER impressive if they don’t swim regularly and dropped those

JP input is too short

I know John Long has had some USMS Top Ten entries recently so I assume he’s swimming at least semi-regularly.

The University of Indiana is in PA. Indiana University, where these three coaches work is in Bloomington, Indiana…

As an IU Bloomington Alumnus, was going to mention the same thing. Thanks HoosierEli. SwimSwam, please change the headline & header, thanks. This is IU Bloomington, not U of Indiana in PA. Notice we say “IU” not U of I (such as Illinois for example). Thank you. Much appreciated.

Actually the name of the school is Indiana University of PA NOT the University of Indiana. That would be like saying University of West Virginia when everyone knows it’s West Virginia University.

It’s actually IUP (Indiana University of Penn.) in PA, too! Both IU, no U of Indiana!
