Indiana Water Polo Signs Six To Class Of 2022

Press Release courtesy of Indiana Athletics

Indiana head water polo coach Ryan Castle announced the six signees to the Hoosiers’ incoming class of 2022, set to arrive on campus for the Fall 2018 semester. Christina Doherty (Aliso Niguel, Calif.), Lauren Etnyre (Lafayette, Calif.), Hannah Falls-Hand (Riverside, Calif.), Sarah Greeven (Carlsbad, Calif.), Isabella Mandema (Atherton, Calif), and Molly McGuire (Oak Park, Ill.) make up the new group set to join IU Water Polo next year.

This is an extremely versatile class that will make a huge impact in all aspects at IU from the moment they arrive on campus,” Castle said. “They’re all athletic, fierce competitors, and extremely diligent students.”

These newcomers will have large shoes to fill, Castle continued, as they’ll be the group that slides into rotation after the departure of Indiana’s senior class of 2018. That class—a mix of four-year starters, international team members, and key contributors over the last few years—showed players around the country that they can make an instant impact in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center with the right mindset.

“Overall, we believe this class will significantly increase our depth all over the pool,” Castle commented. “They have size, speed, game sense and an intense desire to win. In the class room, each of them has shown a remarkable commitment to academics and their chosen majors.”

Isabella Mandema • UT • Atherton, Calif.
High School: St. Francis High School
Club Team: Stanford WPC

The Hoosiers received their first commitment from Isabella Mandema, a four-year varsity starter at St. Francis. Mandema scored an astounding 376 goals in her prep career, landing on the All-American team three times. She received four first team All-West Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) honors and three first team selections to the All-Central Coast Section (CCS) squad. Mandema was named the CCS Co-Player of the Year last season as a junior.

Mandema picked up extra training with Stanford WPC—coached by former Olympian Bernice Orwig—and two seasons in the Olympic Development Program (Pacific Zone). KAI~Sports placed Mandema on three Cal-HI All-American teams, an annual compilation of the best players from water polo’s top states.

From Coach Castle: “‘Izzy’ is going to make huge impact here in Bloomington. She’s a fierce competitor, carries an aggressive determination in the water, and a true student of the game. A four-year varsity athlete at St. Francis under Coach Brendon Reutebuch, she’s also been playing for former Olympian Bernice Orwig at the Stanford Club.”

Lauren Etnyre • A • Lafayette, Calif.
High School: Acalanes High School
Club Team: Diablo Alliance WPC

Lauren Etnyre played three seasons at Campolindo, the same school as current freshman Carlie Crumbaugh, before moving to Acalanes her senior season. Etnyre won the CIF North Coast Section title in 2014 with Campolindo and picked up All-Diablo Foothill Athletic League (DFAL) first team selections at both schools. Twice a selection to the All-American squad, Etnyre earned four varsity swimming letters alongside her water polo career.

Additionally, Etnyre is an attacker for head coach Maureen O’Toole Purcell at Diablo Alliance and has trained with the Olympic Development program for the past two years.

From Coach Castle: “Lauren is a fast left-handed attacker who will add a lot down the right hand side of the pool. Lauren is a natural athlete who is really committed to becoming the best water polo player she can be. She played for water polo legend Maureen O’Toole-Purcell at Diablo Alliance. Her father, Mark Etnyre, swam at IU under legendary coach Doc Counsilman in the 1980s.”

Christina Doherty • A • Aliso Niguel, Calif.
High School: Santa Margarita Catholic High School
Club Team: Saddleback El Toro (SET) WPC

Christina Doherty split her high school career between Trabuco Hills and Santa Margarita but made the starting lineup all four years, including two seasons as the team captain. Doherty earned three All-CIF selections and two Most Valuable Player awards from her coaches and teammates. In her sophomore season, Doherty led Orange County in goals (145) and steals (102).

Like Mandema and Etnyre, Doherty trained with the Olympic Development Program for two years. She made the Junior Olympic All-American team this past season.

From Coach Castle: “Christina is highly tenacious and cerebral athlete who will add and complement our current team extremely well. She is fast, strong and aggressive all over the pool, and a natural goal scorer for her high school and club teams.”

Sarah Greeven • GK • Carlsbad, Calif.
High School: Cathedral Prep Catholic High School
Club Team: Carlsbad WPC

Sarah Greeven’s water polo origins began before high school, where she played for Cathedral Prep and Carlsbad WPC. The goalkeeper won U12 titles in the Grommet League and the KAP7 Tournament, and continued with titles at the John Hale Tournament in 2014 (U14) and 2015 (U16). From there, Greeven grabbed team MVP honors in both of her junior varsity seasons and reached the CIF semifinals in both 2015 and 2016.

Greeven is a familiar face at the Junior Olympics as well. She and her teammates earned three top-30 finishes in the Platinum Division, fourth (Silver) in 2012, and fourth (Bronze) in 2016. Greeven competed against Hungary and Scotland in Hungary during the 2014 season.

From Coach Castle: “Sarah is an athletic goalkeeper with length who will immediately compete for playing time when she arrives on campus. She moves really well in the water, and has excellent hand eye coordination. Her vocal and inspirational leadership will make an instant impact to our goalkeeper corps.”

Hannah Falls-Hand • UT • Riverside, Calif.
High School: Martin Luther King High School
Club Team: Riverside WPC

Hannah Falls-Hand made the transfer from swimming to water polo after picking up a ball in her prep years and learned the game quickly. Falls-Hand earned MVP honors on her junior varsity team in 2015, the first season of her career. From there, Falls-Hand helped the Wolves win two league titles and reach the CIF Southern Section semifinals in 2016 (Div. 2), eventually winning the Division 3 CIFSS title in 2017. For that effort Falls-Hand gained All-Big VIII and All-CIF honors last season.

With her club, Riverside WPC, Falls-Hand has gone to the Junior Olympics for the last three years, earning the silver medal (Classic Division) in 2017.

From Coach Castle: “Hannah is a dangerously mobile athlete who will give us many offensive options throughout the pool, but more importantly she’s an extremely long defender who has a very high water polo I.Q.”

Molly McGuire • D • Oak Park, Ill.
High School: Fenwick High School
Club Team: Windy City WPC

Molly McGuire has made the most of her brief time over three years at Fenwick, with potential for a superlative senior season. As a freshman, McGuire received second team All-Conference honors with a fourth team All-Sectional honor. She earned more of the same as a sophomore in 2016, alongside a fourth team All-State selection. McGuire compiled her best season yet last year with first team selections to the All-Conference, All-Sectional, and All-State teams. McGuire added a fourth-place finish at swimming sectionals (100 freestyle) that same season.

From Coach Castle: “Mollie brings an energetic and versatile athletic skill set to the pool. She has the wingspan and temperament to become a very good 2m defender, and she also brings a lot of speed which fits with our motion style of offense.”
