Interactive Infographics: Men’s DI NCAA invites by conference

This week will be all about the women, with the female NCAA Championships kicking off in Minneapolis on Thursday and looking like an extremely entertaining show. But before we switch gears fully, here’s a quick prepper for the men’s NCAA Championships, which will follow the women’s meet by one week.

The men will compete in Austin, Texas, and final invite lists for swimmers were announced last week. As with the women’s invites, we’ve put together some interactive infographics breaking down the invites by team and conference. (To keep things consistent with the women, this list includes swimmers only, although diving should definitely factor into the national title hunt).

The men’s invites are much more clearly centralized in the big five conferences, even more so than the women. The SEC once again leads the way with 55 individual swimming qualifiers, but the Pac-12 is very close with 49.

Just as it was with the women, the Big Ten and ACC are absolutely deadlocked: the men of each conference had exactly 39 invitees after the women’s numbers also came up in a tie. Texas’s strong showing in the Big 12 made that the fifth big conference to garner large invite numbers.

You can switch back and forth through our various graphics using the tabs at the top of the page.

These graphs are interactive: clicking on a team or conference will highlight it, hovering over it with your mouse will bring up more statistics.

The first tab breaks down the invites by team and conference. Click on any team to see the list below of all their invited athletes. You can also click on the name of the conference below each bar to see a list of all the swimmers invited from that conference.

The second tab shows the total invite numbers for each conference, and the third tab the total numbers for each individual team.

Note: organizing the conferences into viewable graphs required lumping together mid-majors in the first graph. As “mid-major” can be a relative term, this analysis considered 6 co-ed conferences each with a likely top 10-15 team “Majors” (AAC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC) and categorized the rest as Mid-Majors.

Mobile users may also wish to view the graphs on the web here instead of using the embedded version.
