The IOC is scheduled to hold a special Executive Board meeting on June 9th at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, to accelerate plans to award both the 2024 and 2028 Olympic Games when it meets to vote officially this September in Lima, Peru.
At present, Los Angeles and Paris remain in a dead-heat for the right to host the 2024 Games. While the Paris bid does require some construction whereas all of the infrastructure is in place in LA, both cities have created robust and exceptional bids that have continually impressed IOC members. Both cities have received strong public support for their bids to host the 2024 Games, a factor that caused Budapest to withdraw its bid in February.
The Executive Board will not vote on awarding either the 2024 or 2028 Games to either city when it convenes on the 9th, as IOC members prefer to have their voices heard by casting their own votes in September. However, representatives from Paris and LA may aid in striking a three-party deal in order to further IOC President Thomas Bach’s proposal to award both iterations of the Games this year. Bach will chair the one-day meeting, which will also include Australia’s John Coates, Turkey’s Uğur Erdener, China’s Yu Zaiqing and Spain’s Juan Antonio Samaranch, who are the four IOC vice-presidents.
Though the Summer Games of 2024 and 2028 will be the main topics when the Executive Board meets on the 9th, they will also discuss the 2026 Winter Games candidature process. Bidding for the 2026 Winter Games does not oficially begin until the conclusion of the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea; however, the IOC, in accordance with the Olympic Agenda 2020, has begun taking extra care in vetting candidate cities before awarding them with the rights to host an Olympic Games.
Los Angeles 2024 Summer Olympic Games!
If they are awarding 2024 and 2028 at the same time, im convinced Paris gets 2024 and LA gets 2028. It seems that the IOC desperately wants to get the Games back to the US, but do not want to do so under the risk of a President Trump (although I do not expect him to be in office past 2020 at the most)
I imagine the scene in 2024 with Trump in the LA olympic stadium! 😆
A nightmare! All nations except Russia and Saudi Arabia would boycott the ceremony.
No, it will not happen. Because Paris has 99% of chances to host the olympic games in 2024.
However, Trump not being reelected…. 🙄 W has been reelected in 2004 despite the Iraq fiasco and the big lies so anything can happen with Americans! 😆 As long as you have a crazy low turnout, so much corporate money in the campaign finance system and such an outrageous outdated and anti-democratic presidential election system then anything can happen. Impeachment? Maybe but I doubt his R friends in Congress will give us… Read more »
Really hope the democrats run with a better candidate this time around. Better for America and better for democracy across the globe. But please Bobo, keep the political discussions off this site. Every time US politics are mentioned you jump in and fan the flames. People will be more responsive and more interested in talking politics on a different website regardless of your political views.
Bobo makes a fair point. I’d concur that it is tired and old to make these points here. I’m no fan of the guy either, but let’s all remember: the LA Games play is a municipal, not a federal, one. The financial skins in the game are all on LA and possibly the surrounding municipalities. That’s not a making America great jengo set.
hey bobo, how will Paris work with all those terrorist attacks? We might have Trump, but at least our country isn’t getting attacked (or on our fifth Republic)….
Bobo: If a 40 year old teacher “dated” one of his/her 15 year old students in the US, that would be grounds for statutory rape (varies from state to state). I guess that’s not the case in France (Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron). Vive la différence!
Yup. Bobo was correct on this earlier. The IOC is clearly sending a signal it is Paris 2024 & LA 2028.
Smart move. The IOC needs to re-establish some credibility. Kazan as a winter choice was a disgraceful rubles grab before the petro trade blew up. Rio was a hit-and-run job that will leave the city in financial shambles that make the Montreal 1976 post-mortem fiscal disaster look like a joke.
Tokyo followed by Paris & LA is all the way solid. IOC needs to pivot their model toward establishing at most 2 cities per continent to rotate the summer games between. A Beijing, London, LA, Sydney, Paris, Tokyo repeat cycle for the summer games? That would make a lot… Read more »
Joel, your proposal of a rota of countries/cities (esp of sucessfull former host cities) sounds wonderful in concept but is actually somewhat more problematic in reality.
A number of venues facilities may be temporary in nature and whilst this should, in theory, be a slam dunk “just reconstruct them again in short order”, will that land still be available X no of years down the track or has it been sold/re-utilised ?
What of some of the major facilities ? In many/most cases, to make them economically viable post Games they need to be redeveloped (ie removal of athletics track), remodelled as regards shape for future tenants (football codes), spectator capacity downgraded immensely (aquatic centres). Whilst of course,… Read more »
