IOC ‘Fully Respects’ IAAF Decision to Ban Russia

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has released a statement in support of the IAAF’s decision to continue the Russian international competition ban on track, field, race-walking, and road-racing federation (aka, ‘athletics’ in the international nomenclature) through the upcoming Rio Olympic Games.

The IOC says that they ‘fully respect’ the IAAF position and says that international sport federations remain responsible for athlete eligibility for any international competition.

Read the full IOC statement below:

The IOC has taken note of the decision of the IAAF Council and of the report and recommendations of the IAAF Taskforce.

The IOC Executive Board, in a telephone conference today, emphasized that it fully respects the IAAF position. The eligibility of athletes in any international competition including the Olympic Games is a matter for the respective International Federation.

The IOC will initiate further far-reaching measures in order to ensure a level playing field for all the athletes taking part in the Olympic Games Rio 2016. The upcoming Olympic Summit on Tuesday will address the situation of the countries in which the National Anti-Doping Organisation has been declared non-compliant by WADA for reasons of the non-efficient functioning of the national anti-doping system.

One glaring fact here. John Coates is both the IOC Vice President – AND the President of CAS. So basically if the IOC does an action that is appealed to CAS -it’s the same guy . He is the LEO & the Court of Appeal.

He’s not the only one .

Quibble: Quotes in headlines imply direct quote of the actual statement. Actual statement was ‘fully respects,’ not ‘supports.’ There’s an arguable difference.
