Iona Sweeps Pace, Winning 25 of 28 Events

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Competing in their final home meet of the season, the Pace University swimming and diving teams were swept by Division I Iona College on Wednesday night.

Women’s Results (Iona 153.5, Pace 119.5)
Graduate student Annabel Keppel-Palmer (Kent, England/Maidstone Grammar School) served as the Setters’ top performer against the Gaels. The England native racked up a trio of individual victories in the 200-fly (2:16.19), the 200-back (2:12.78) and the 200-IM (2:16.67).

Senior diver Amy Calandro (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) also posted a pair of victories in the form of both diving events. The team captain posted a high mark of 188.4 in the one-meter before registering a top score of 218.7 in the three-meter.

Classmate Katherine Devaney (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Eastchester) rounded out the Blue and Gold’s top scorers. The Westchester County native put together a low time of 1:04.44 in the 100-fly.

Men’s Results (Iona 167, Pace 106)
The Setters tallied four individual triumphs on the men’s side, including a sweep of both diving events.

Senior Patrick Dwyer (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland) took home the top score in the one-meter dive (278.85), while freshman Greg Asayan (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) recorded the night’s high score in the three-meter (290.35).

Seniors Samuel Gibson (Nassau, Bahamas/Saint Andrew’s) and Nicholas Lombardo (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) also notched wins against Iona. Gibson raced to the low mark in the 100-fly (56.77), while Lombardo topped the field in the 200-IM (2:10.50).

Lombardo chipped in a second-place effort as well in the 1,000-free with a time of 10:46.23.

Up Next
The Setters will compete one final time in the 2021-22 regular season with a trip to Vassar College on Friday night (Jan. 21).

PLEASANTVILLE, NY – Touching the wall first in 25 of the 28 swimming events, the Iona College men’s and women’s swim team rolled to a pair of wins tonight on the road at Pace University.

MEET SUMMARY

The Iona men claimed each of the 14 races, to improve to 7-2 on the season with a 167-106 victory. The Iona women posted wins in 12 of the 14 swim races to win 153.5 to 119.5 and raise their season mark to 8-2.

Winners on the men’s side included Emil Bajramovic (200Breast); Grant Edwards (500-Free); Michael Faughnan (100-Back); Daniel Hadary (200-Back); Aidan Holbrook (50-Free); Conor Mullin (100 and 200-Free); Jalen Ramjohn (100-Breast); David Son (200-Fly) and Senior Trevor Foti, who posted his first collegiate individual career win in the 1000-Freestyle.

The Iona women saw wins from Ashley Benkert (50-Free and 200-IM); Molly Finn (100-Back); Megan Josephs (100-Free); Katherine Lee (200-Free and 100-Fly); Isabella Nicholson (100-Breast and 500-Free); Taylor Spillman (1000-Fee) and Tristan Urso (200-Breast)

COACHES COMMENTS

“Coming out of a heavy intersession training period, it was nice to get back to racing,” commented Coach Nick Cavataro. “There were some very solid efforts up and down our line-up and we saw our entire roster contribute. However, we know we will have to be ready for three really good opponents over the next 10 days with Fairfield, Fordham and Manhattan.”
