Iowa downs Iowa State, Extends Win Streak to Five in Instate Rivalry

The Iowa women extended their win streak over Iowa State with a fifth consecutive victory this weekend, meaning Iowa is a Hawkeye state for another year, at least in the pool.

In the meet, Becky Stoughton won three events, Emma Sougstad won two, Olivia Kabacinski won two, and Meghan Lavelle won two events on the Hawkeyes way to victory.

The annual Cy-Hawk showdown featured a 50 freestyle race between Tom and Terry Brands, the Hawkeye wrestling coaches who were each world champions and Olympic medalists in their sport. The showdown also featured former Iowa wrestling coach Dan Gable, a 15 time NCAA champion as a coach, as the starter.

Gable separated the brothers Brands up from lanes four and five to lanes four and six before the race, citing how much they fought while he coached them.

Terry Brands got excited and false started on the first attempt, and swam a full 25 yards before he stopped and swam back.

Neither brother performed a flip turn, but Tom Brands took the title in 35.52, without goggles. Terry Brands finished in 37.72.

200 medley relay:

Iowa State got out to a .05 second early lead on the backstroke leg, but a 27.30 from Iowa’s  Sougstad on the breaststroke leg was more than enough to put the Cyclones away.

Rowan Hauber, Sougstad, Carly O’Brien, and Olivia Kabacinski, combined for a 1:40.60 to take first.

Iowa State made up half a second of the deficit on the butterfly thanks to Amanda Paulson’s 24.02 split. but the Cyclones were out matched as Kabacinski split a 22.72 freestyle leg for the Hawkeyes compared to Savanna Townsend’s 23.21 for the Cyclones.

Iowa State’s A relay of Kasey Roberts, Danica Delaquis, Paulson, and Townsend touched second in 1:42.67. The Iowa B relay of Meghan Lavelle, Colleen Champa, Summer Campbell, and Mekenna Scheitlin touched third with a 1:43.06.

1000 freestyle:

Becky Stoughton showed no signs of slowing down after dominating the distance events at the Hawkeye Invite. Stoughton blew out the field yet again, winning by about a full length of the pool in 9:54.23 and beating the closest Cyclone by 25 seconds

Hawkeye senior Hillary Weigand took second in 10:11.25. Finishing a distant third was Iowa State’s Karyl Clarete with a 10:19.25.

200 freestyle:

Following the 1000, a string of 1,2,3, finishes propelled the Hawkeyes gave the Hawkeyes a big points boost in over their instate rivals.

Kabacinski (1:48.47), Serena Wanasek (1:50.75), and Jennifer Weigand (1:50.94), completed the sweep for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa State’s Sarah Deis took fourth in 1:51.01. Nikol Lagodzinska took fifth for the Hawkeyes with a 1:51.25.

100 Backstroke:

Iowa’s second sweep in as many events came on in the 100 backstroke. Lavelle and Allie Orvis each swam NCAA B cut times in 54.48 and 54.91, respectively, to take the one to finish for the Hawkeyes.

Rowan Hauber was third for the Hawkeyes with a 55.29. Iowa State’s Marissa Engel was fourth for the Cyclones with a 56.13, Bre Loeschke followed her in fifth for the Cyclones with a 56.16.

100 breaststroke:

Sougstad continued her lights out swimming for the Hawkeyes with another school record performance in the 100 breaststroke.. She broke the school record she set last weekend with a 1:00.14, It is only a matter of time before she becomes the first Hawkeye woman to break a minute in the breaststroke.

Iowa State, however, broke the Hawkeyes streak sweep with Roberts’ 1:02.19  second place performance.

Champa finished third for the Hawkeyes in 1:02.48. Ali Stearns finished fourth for Iowa Sate in 1:02.55.

200 butterfly:

Stoughton got her second victory before the first break in school record fashion. Her 1:59.42 broke the old record of 1:59.68. Her swim is also good for an NCAA B cut.

Tereysa Lehnertz took second for Iowa in 2:01.34. Mary Kate Luddy was third for Iowa State in 2:03.61.

Campbell took fourth for the Hawkeyes in 2:03.95.

50 freestyle:

Iowa State scored a 1,2 finish and their first win of the meet from Paulson and Townsend. Paulson won the 50 freestyle with a 23.11, Townsend was second with a 23.61.

Iowa took third, fourth, and fifth, however, with Scheitlin leading the way in 23.65. Taylor Flummerfelt was next in 23.82. O’Brien rounded out the top five in 23.86.

100 freestyle:

Kabacinski won her second event of the evening with a 49.82. She was the only swimmer to break 50 seconds in the 100 freestyle.

Alex Flatness, Paulson, and Sarah Deis touched second, third, and fourth for Iowa State in 51.26, 51.30, and 51.31 respectively.

200 backstroke:

Lavelle got her second backstroke win of the evening with here 1:58.27 first place time in the 200 back. She beat the field by a second  and a half, bolstered by a 57.29 opening split.

Engel was second for Iowa State with a 1:59.82, the only other swimmer under two minutes.

Loeschke and Kristy Kunkel finished third and fourth for the Cyclones in 2:01.81 and 2:04.64.

200 breaststroke:

Sougstad got her second win of the evening in the 200 breaststroke by over a second. Sougstad was first in 2:11.71, followed by Champa in 2;12.89. to score more points for the Hawkeyes.

Roberts of Iowa State took third in 2:15.91, followed by her teammate Ali Stearns in 2:17.79.

Sougstad, Champa, and Roberts all swam to NCAA B cuts.

500 freestyle:

Stoughton dominated again in the distance event as Iowa completed another sweep. Stoughton won by 13 seconds in 4:48.81, and looked just as good as she throughout Friday’s meet as she did at the Hawkeye Invite.

Wanasek was second for the Hawkeyes in 5:01.95, followed by Weigand in 5:03.45.

100 butterfly:

Lehnertz won the 100 fly for the Hawkeyes with a strong performance. Lehnertz finished in 55.31 for the Hawkeyes. Kaylee Kucera of Iowa State finished in 55.72 for second, Her teammates Luddy and Townsend were third and fourth in 56.17 and 56.41 respectively.

200 IM:

Roberts scored Iowa State’s second and only other win of the evening in the women’s 200 IM, using a strong backstroke leg to propel her to a victory. She split a 31.20 compared to Champa’s 32.75

Champa reeled in Roberts with a 33.98 breaststroke split compared to Robert’s 35.67, but Roberts hung on in the freestyle to take the victory. Roberts touched in 2:02.56, Champa finished in 2:03.38.

Orvis finished third for the Hawkeyes in 2:04.06.

400 freestyle relay:

The final relay put an exclamation point on the Hawkeyes’ victory, as the team of Lavelle, Lagodzinska, Sougstad, and Kabacinski swam to a victory in 3:22.26, including a 3:223.26 from Kabacinski on the anchor leg.

Deis, Townsend, Flatness, and Paulson were second for Iowa State in 3:24.30 with Paulson splitting a 50.13. Iowa’s B relay finished in 3:27.03 from Wanasek, O’Brien, Stoughton, and Jennifer Weigand.
