Iowa Hawkeyes Land 49.9 100 Freestyler Sarah Schemmel

Sarah Schemmel of the Piranhas Swim Club has elected to stay in-state and will join the University of Iowa‘s class of 2021.

TOP TIMES

  • 50 free – 23.07
  • 100 free – 49.97
  • 200 free – 1:51.18
  • 100 fly – 55.40

A senior at Muscatine High School in southeastern Iowa, Schemmel is the defending Iowa HS Champ in both the 50 and 100 free. She’s a 2016 Winter Jr Nationals qualifier in the 50 and 100 free along with the 100 fly.

Schemmel’s sprint free times are tantalizing for an Iowa team that didn’t score any points in the 50 or the 100 free at last year’s Big Ten Championships. Had she gone her best times at B1G’s last season, she’d have scored in both of those events in the C final. Additionally, she’s not very far off of scoring in the 100 fly at the B1G level.

More than just an individual boost for Iowa, Schemmel is fast enough to make any of the five relays for the Hawkeyes. In the 400 free relay, for example, her flat start 100 free is faster than any leg went at last year’s B1G Champs.

Iowa’s had a small but strong recruiting season thus far, with Schemmel joining the following in their class of 2021:
