The Hawkeye women were dominant in their win over the Cyclones, winning 14 of 16 events throughout the in-state dual meet.

Senior Hawkeye Emma Sougstad was the biggest individual winner on the day, touching first in three individual events: the 100 breast (1:01.08), 200 breast (2:14.06) and 200 IM (2:01.70). The Hawkeyes also had three other swimmers and one diver claim two individual titles. Meghan Lavelle won the 100 (54.61) and 200 (1:58.96) backstroke, Mekenna Scheitlin won the 50 free (22.86) and the 100 fly (54.93), and Hannah Burvill won the 100 (49.74) and 200 freestyle (1:47.37).

Freshman diver Thelma Strandberg won both the 1-meter (278.15) and 3-meter (297.35) springboards for the Hawkeyes.

For Iowa State (now 1-2-1), Freshman Keely Soellner won the 500 (4:51.55) and 1000 free (9:56.76).

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team rolled to its seventh straight victory over Iowa State on Friday night at the UI CRWC Natatorium.  The Hawkeyes won 14-of-16 events en route to a 197-101 Cy-Hawk Series victory.

“We really challenged our team this week with some tough practices,” said UI head coach Marc Long.  “For them to step up and perform as well as they did, in the pool and off the boards, against a team that was really gunning for us was great.  I’m proud of the team’s effort.” 

On the night, the Hawkeyes posted 19 season bests and 11 career bests, while eight individuals combined to produced eight NCAA provisional times.

The Hawkeyes got off to a strong start with an early 1-2 showing in the opening 200-medley relay.  The quartet of senior Emma Sougstad, juniors Meghan Lavelle and Mekenna Scheitlin, and freshman Hannah Burvill took first with a time of 1:39.62 — all four went on to win at least two individual events on Friday. 

The Hawkeyes went 1-2-3-4 in the 200 free with Burvill leading the way.  She clocked in with a NCAA ‘B’-cut 1:47.37.  Burvill also swam to a first-place finish in the 100 free with a top time of 49.74.

Sougstad didn’t set any new school records on Friday, but she did swim to first-place finishes in the 100 breast (1:01.08), 200 breast (2:14.06), and 200 IM (2:01.70).  She accounted for 38 of Iowa’s total points scored.

In the backstroke, it was Lavelle who carried the Hawkeyes.  She touched first in the 100 (54.61) and 200 (1:58.96) — both NCAA ‘B’ cut times.

Scheitlin recorded two wins of her own, touching first in the 50 free (22.86) and 100 fly (54.93).  Her time in the 50 free meets NCAA ‘B’ qualifications and is a career best.

In the 200 fly, junior Tereysa Lehnertz posted Iowa’s top time, touching first in a time of 1:59.96. 

Iowa ended the night with a victory in the 400-free relay.  Burvill, junior Carly O’Brien, Lavelle, and senior Taylor Flummerfelt clocked in with a winning-time of 3:24.78.

In the diving well, the Hawkeyes were led by freshman Thelma Strandberg.  She took first in the both the 3-meter (297.35) and 1-meter (278.15), earning a total of 18 points for the black and gold. 

Tonight’s pool victory gives Iowa a 12-7 advantage over Iowa State in this year’s Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

Next up for the Hawkeyes is a trip to South Bend, Indiana, for a triple dual against Illinois and Notre Dame.  The two-day event begins on Jan. 12 at 5:30 p.m. (CT).

IOWA CITY – The Iowa State swimming and diving team fell to Iowa, 197-101, Friday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City as part of the Iowa Corn CyHawk Series.

The Cyclones came off the blocks fast, posting the team’s best 200 medley relay time of the season. The group of Harper Emswiler, Kasey Roberts, Kenzie Goudreau and Laura Miksch swam to a time of 1:42.58 to crack the All-Time Top Performers chart for the event at No. 10.

Freshman Keely Soellner followed suit in a big way, breaking the Iowa State school record in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:56.76. Her finish, which made her the first Cyclone woman to break the 10-minute mark, beat out the previous school record by more than six seconds.

Cyclones set season-best times in the next five events, including personal records from Danica Delaquis in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.60) and Laura Miksch in the 50 freestyle (23.15).

In the diving well, Katherine Mueller continued building off scores that have improved all season. The freshman earned a score of 205.60 to top her previous personal best by 17 points. Later on the three-meter board, senior Julie Dickinson led the Cyclone charge with a score of 257.50 to take second.

After the diving break, Delaquis broke her personal record in the 200 breaststroke by touching in 2:15.55 and earning the first NCAA ‘B’ cut of her career. The junior’s finish moved her into the No. 5 spot for top performers in Iowa State history. Soellner also set another personal best, finishing the 500 freestyle in 4:51.55 for a first-place finish.

Freshmen Kami Pankratz and Emma Ruehle rounded out the personal-record-setting efforts for the Cyclones on the night, touching in 58.71 in the 100 butterfly and 2:06.95 in the 200 IM, respectively.

On the night, the Cyclones totaled 11 personal records and 28 season-best times/scores set.

Up Next

Iowa State enters its midseason break from competition, which last until mid-January. The Cyclones will travel to Puerto Rico for their annual Winter Training Trip Dec. 30 – Jan. 7.  Iowa State’s next competition is not until Jan. 14 when the Cyclones hit the road for a dual meet with the University of Illinois.
