Iowa State Champ and Futures Finalist Nora Kemp Staying In-State, Heading to Iowa (2024)

Central Iowa Aquatics’ Nora Kemp will be staying in-state and heading to the University of Iowa in the fall of 2024. A freestyle specialist with range across all the free distances, Kemp also competes for Waukee Senior High School, which is located in the greater Des Moines area.

Kemp most recently competed at the Futures Championship in West Fargo, where she posted a 6th-place finish in the women’s 200 free. She was also a ‘B’ finalist in the 200 IM, 800 free, and 100 free.

At the Iowa Swimming Short Course State Championship (Yards) in February, Kemp won the women’s 200 free. She also took 2nd in the 1000 free, 3rd in the 50 free, 4th in the 100 free, 4th, in the 500 free, and 5th in the 200 IM.

Kemp will be joining an Iowa team which is still in the midst of a rebuild after the program was eliminated and subsequently reinstated a few years ago. The Hawkeyes had a 1-7-1 overall record last year, including an 0-6 record within the Big Ten. Their lone win came against Northern Iowa, while they also tied Vanderbilt. Given Kemp’s strength as a freestyle, she should be an immediate asset to the team, both in her individual races as well as relays.

Kemp’s personal best in the 200 free would have put her 2nd on Iowa’s roster last year (2022-23 season), while her 100 free would have been 3rd, and her 50 free 5th. On top of that, she would have come in at 3rd in both the 500 free and 1000 free for the Hawkeyes, and 2nd in the 400 IM.

The Hawkeyes finished 12th out of 12 teams at the 2023 Women’s Big Ten Championships. It’s still a little early for the Class of 2024 recruits, however, at this point, Kemp will be joining Elizabeth Beam, Simone Beinlich, and Rachel Dildine in Iowa’s 2024 class. Dildine is primarily a spring flyer and freestyler, while Beam is a backstroker with some good 50 free speed to boot, and Beinlich is a diver. Given that, though the class in still small at this point, Iowa’s already covering a number of bases with their 2024 class as they continue to rebuild the program.
