The Cyclone swimming and diving team is set to open the 2017-18 regular season on Saturday. For their first competitive action, Iowa State with be on a business trip to Lincoln, Neb. for a dual meet with the Cornhuskers. The meet will kick off on Oct. 21 at noon.
LAST TIME – Cardinal and Gold Meet
The Cardinal and Gold meet took place last Friday, an event in which the Cardinal team prevailed. sophomore Keely Soellner, who swept the distance freestyle races on Friday, and newcomers Dana Liva and Anna Andersen who both shined brightly, led the Cardinal team. Liva took both diving events, and Andersen won the 100 freestyle in addition to participating in two winning relays.
THE OPPONENT – Nebraska Cornhuskers
Iowa State’s opponent traveled to Cedar Falls in a matchup with Northern Iowa, knocking off the Panthers by a score of 154-86. Nebraska comes into Saturday’smeet with a 36-6-1 record against the Cyclones. Both teams feature 20 underclassmen listed on their roster.
Last season, Nebraska went undefeated in dual meets, including a 195.5-101.5 win in Ames. The 2016-17 Huskers also took home the Kansas Classic championship for the second-consecutive year.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR – Freestyle
The sprint events will feature returning All-Conference swimmer Laura Miksch, junior Evan Hundley, and newcomer Anna Andersen. In the middle distance and distance events, look for the likes of school record holder Keely Soellner, as well as a pair of Cyclone all-time top-five performers Mary Kate Luddy and Haley Ruegemer.
ON DECK – Omaha
If you missed the Cardinal and Gold meet, you will not have to wait long for a look at this year’s team. The Cyclones’ first regular season home meet is on Friday, Oct. 27 against Omaha, a team Iowa State holds a 15-0-0 advantage over all time. The Omaha meet will start at 6 p.m. Admission to the Omaha meet is free.
