The Iowa State athletics department was hit with huge, sweeping sanctions by the NCAA late last week after all 18 of the school’s athletics programs were found to have made impermissible phone calls to recruits.
The full report, outlining over 1,800 impermissible calls, can be found here, but our focus will be on swimming.
Between July of 2008 and April of 2011, there were 121 phone calls made to 64 recruits by teams in the “miscellaneous sports category” that includes wrestling, women’s swimming, women’s soccer, women’s gymnastics, women’s golf, and women’s volleyball. 111 of those calls were not logged as to be tracked for permissibility of NCAA rules.
The additional 10 calls were singled out for specifically more heinous violations, one of which belonged to swimming. In September of 2010, a “women’s swimming and diving coach” made one call to a prospect who had already been called one time in the legislated time period.
Iowa State already placed a one-week sanction on their women’s swimming program in 2011, where coaches were barred from initiating contact with recruits, they were hit with a second week-long sanction by the NCAA, which expired on Saturday, September 7th. This means that if you were expecting a call from the Iowa State coaches last week, this is why it never came.

So the NCAA considers one extra call in a week, probably from oversight and probably not intentional, a “heinous violation” ??
And people wonder why the NCAA is broken?
DutchWomen – I think the punishment gives an indication of how worried the NCAA was about that one call. Don’t take the description out of context….
