AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) landed their second victory of the season and second win at home, taking down South Dakota (2-4, 1-0 Summit League) 191-102. The Cyclones won all 16 events, and in six of those events had top two placements.
Iowa State wasn’t afraid to double-down against the Coyotes as they kicked off the meet with an immediate win. The 200 medley relay team consisting of Sophia Goushchina, Gabrielle LePine, Trinity Kay, and Carley Caughron placed first with 1:45.03 and about two seconds behind was Elizabeth Richardson, Paige Hanley, Lucia Rizzo, and Andie Quirke.
Three Cyclones claimed the top three spots in the 1000 free. Brinley Horras solidified first place with 10:22.67, behind was Madison Rundell with 10:29.11, and in third place with a time of 10:37.43 was Sydney Jackson. Horras earned her second title win against South Dakota in the 500 free with a time of 5:02.95.
“I’m glad to see Brinley swimming great in the 500 and 1000 split,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “She’s just pacing really well and didn’t have any competition.”
Ashley Bengtson touched the wall with a time of 1:52.69 in the 200 free to take the win, while Corinne Guist earned second place with 1:55.82.
Goushchina (56.53), Kay (57.57), and Richardson (57.88) solidified the top three placements in the 100 back. Richardson got herself another event win in the 200 back with a time of 2:03.52.
LePine swam the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.54 to add another collegiate win to her record. Rizzo was victorious in the 200 fly with a time of 2:09.87 and .18 seconds behind was Mallory Miller. In her second event win against South Dakota, Rizzo swam 2:08.33 in the 200 IM.
Caughron claimed two event wins. She posted a time of 23.88 in the 50 free to put her up at first. This is her best time of the season and following behind is Maddie Ziegert (24.59) and Quirke (24.60). She also took the 100 free event with a time of 51.34.
“Carley Caughron did an outstanding job in the 50 and 100 free and she’s only 16 or 17 hundredths of a second off her lifetime best in the 100 free and so that’s fantastic for being at this part of the year,” Sorenson said.
Joscelyn Buss earned a score of 283.55 in the 3-meter springboard, putting her at the top. Ally Blumenfeld got third with 270.25 and in fifth, Kate Mitchell got a score of 245.35. In the 1-meter, Jayna Misra was victorious in winning first place with a score of 288.05.
Alaina Breitbach got herself a win in the 200 breast with a time of 2:23.29. Kay touched the wall with 58.16 seconds in the 100 fly, landing a victory.
The Cyclones closed out the meet with a win in the 400 free relay. Goushchina, Caughron, Horras, and Bengtson landed their time of 3:28.15.

Next up the divers head to Columbia, Mo. for the Mizzou Invite Nov. 16-18 and the swimmers take on the Kansas Classic in Topeka, Kan. Nov. 18-20 for the first championship-style meets of the season.

AMES, Iowa – Taylor Buhr and Stella Fairbanks each recorded a pair of runner-up performances during South Dakota’s women’s swimming and diving dual meet against Iowa State on Friday inside Beyer Pool.
Buhr, a freshman from Bettendorf, Iowa, placed second in the 100 breast in 1:06.17 and in the 200 IM in 2:12.29.
Fairbanks, a junior from Highland, Michigan, posted season bests in both diving events, recording 279.9 on the three-meter board and 261.65 on the one-meter board.
The Coyotes also received runner-up finishes from Christina Spomer in the 100 free (55.15), Tatum O’Shea in the 200 back (2:08.41), Cassie Ketterling in the 200 breast (2:25.96), Emily Kahn in the 500 free (5:19.81) and Sara Mayer in the 100 fly (59.46).
South Dakota’s foursome of O’Shea, Camilla Brogger-Andersen, Mayer and Ketterling posted a runner-up finish in the 400 free relay in 3:37.43.
Samantha Mersnick posted a career-high on the one-meter diving board, scoring 254.15 points to highlight the third-place finishes for the Coyotes.
Brogger-Andersen had a pair of third-place efforts in the meet, clocking 1:56.15 in the 200 free and 2:10.91 in the 200 back.
Maddie Katz was third in the 200 fly in 2:16.21 while other third-place performances for South Dakota came from Emily Johnson in the 100 free (55.89), Liv Caldwell in the 200 breast (2:34.71), Mairead Powers in the 500 free (5:22.0), Skyler Leverenz in the 100 fly (1:01.15) and Skylar Well in the 200 IM (2:16.46).
The Coyote quartet of Grace Schultz, Buhr, Kahn and Spomer placed third in the 200 medley relay in 1:48.33.
South Dakota will host the two-day Coyote Extravaganza inside the Midco Aquatic Center in Sioux Falls next Friday and Saturday.
