Junior Kenneth Mende won the 200-yard backstroke with a season-best time and sophomore Hannah Burvill set a school-record in the 100 free to help the University of Iowa swim team close out competition at the Minnesota Invitational at the Jean Freeman Aquatic Center.
MEN’S HIGHLIGHTS
Mende and Thomas Rathbun paced the Hawkeyes, touching in at 1:44.02 and 1:45.68 to finish first and second in the 200-back. Both Mende and Rathbun posted NCAA “B” qualifying times.
In the 1,650-free, Chris Dawson and Tom Schab posted third and fourth-place finishes with times of 15:37.04 and 15:47.30, respectively. Jack Smith and Joseph Myhre followed with season-bests in the 100-free finishing second and third, touching in at 43.93 and 44.39. Smith’s time is a NCAA “B” qualifying time.
Daniel Swanepoel swam to a 1:57.18 time in the 200 breast to tally an NCAA “B” qualifying time. He finished second in the event, while Michael Tenney posted another career-best and top finish in the 200-fly with a time of 1:47.49, while posting a “B” qualifying time.
Iowa’s relay consisting of Myhre, Michal Brzus, Will Scott, and Smith took second place, posting a season-best in the 400-free relay, touching in at 2:54.35.
WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS
Burvill’s swim in the 100 free was Iowa’s highlight for the women. She finished with a time of 49.19 in the prelims before bettering her time in the finals, posting a 49.10. Burvill finished third overall in the event.
Freshman Kelsey Drake finished as the runner-up in the 200 fly (1:59.45), while senior Tereysa Lehnertz was third in the same event with a 2:01.41. Senior Meghan Lavelle also tallied a third-place finish in the 200-back with a season-best time of 1:57.90. Drake and Lavelle each posted NCAA “B” qualifying times.
In the 200-breast, Shea Hoyt posted a season-best time of 2:16.16 to finish fifth.
Burvill, Allyssa Fluit, Mekenna Scheitlin, and Carly O’Brien tallied a runner-up finish in the 400-free relay with a season-best time of 3:20.31, while Sarah Schemmel, Jo Jekel, Nikol Lagodzinska, and Lauren Leehy swam to a fourth-place finish with a time of 3:24.07.

The Iowa women returns to action Friday, traveling to Ames, Iowa, to face Iowa State in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series matchup. The event begins at 6 p.m. (CT).
