Iowa’s Lehnertz, Freeman Set for Pan Ams

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa sophomore Tereysa Lehnertz and UI graduate and volunteer assistant coach Deidre Freeman will compete in the 2015 Pan American Games from July 12-16 in Toronto.

“It’s exciting to have such a great Iowa presence at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “It’s a tremendous honor for these Hawkeyes to represent their country at this prestigious international event.”

Lehnertz will compete for Puerto Rico in the 100 and 200-meter butterfly. The Iowa City, Iowa, native will swim in the 200 fly on July 14 and 100 fly on July 16.

“Tereysa’s had an exciting summer thus far by making the Puerto Rican National Team, breaking a national record, and now competing at the Pan American Games,” said Long. “She has worked hard and raced well in preparation for the upcoming games.  We’re proud and excited to see her swim fast and have fun in an amazing competitive environment.”

Freeman will dive for the United States individually off the 3-meter and alongside Maren Taylor in the 3-meter synchronized event.  The preliminaries and finals of the 3-meter will be held July 12, while the 3-meter synchro finals will take place July 13.

“I am proud that Deidre made the team and that she will represent the United States,” said UI diving coach Todd Waikel, who is a team leader for Team USA. “This will be a great venue for her.  Her mother is from Canada and one side of her family lives 1/2 hour outside Toronto.  It’s going to be special for Deidre with all of her family there supporting her.

“Deidre is coming off a great performance at the World Championship Trials.  She is on the up-tick right now, so the expectations are for her to peak perform (this week). If she does that, we’ll be happy with her placing result.”
