Joining fellow teammates Fiona Doyle, Shane Ryan and Oliver Dingley, Irish swimmer Nicholas Quinn has punched his ticket to Rio, qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games.
While competing at the 2016 Eindhoven Cup, Quinn scored a personal best mark of 2:11.24 in the 200m breaststroke, which checked in under the automatic-qualifying time of 2:11.66 and rendered him a spot on the Irish Olympic roster for Rio.
Although Quinn’s time sits well outside of the world’s top 25, it does lower the previous lifetime best of 2:13.04 the 22-year-old, which he earned at the 2015 World University Games, which garnered a 13th place at that competition.
In Eindhoven, his 2:11.24 finals swim earned him the gold while also registering a new meet record, overtaking the old mark of 2:11.35 set by Lennart Stekelenburg in 2011.
Quinn is a Castlebar native who currently trains at the University of Edinburgh, the same training site of 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the 200 breast event, Michael Jamieson.
