The finals session on Sunday night kicked off with a great swim out of Irvine Novaquatics 15-year-old Cindy Wu. Wu got her hands on the wall 1st in 2:21.62, beating out UCLA’s Bailey Herbert, who was right behind in 2:21.65. For Wu, the swim marked a new personal best and her first time under 2:22 in the event. She was very strong on the front half of the race, splitting 29.88 on fly and 36.23 on back, for a 1:06.11 on the opening 100. Her free split of 32.15 was also very solid.
In the men’s 200 IM, Irvine Novaquatics’ Dean Ko, 18, clocked a 2:08.54 to claim victory. Ko chipped 0.13 seconds off his career best with the swim. Like his teammate Wu, Ko was out fast, splitting 27.69 on fly and 32.53 on back, for a 1:00.22 on the front half. He had a very strong breast split of 38.28, then came home in 30.04 on free.
Irvine Novaquatics kept the ball rolling, seeing 14-year-old Tiffany Man win the women’s 50 free in a speedy 26.86. For Man, the swim represented a huge new career best, blowing away her entry time of 28.67. The swim marks a new Winter Junior Nationals cut for the youngster.
