The 3rd day of the Fullerton Sectionals meet saw a pair of excellent 100 breast out of some Irvine Novaquatics girls. NOVA 17-year-old Kaitlyn Nguyen, a USC recruit, won the event in 1:10.35, touching out 14-year-old teammate Bianca Nwaizu, who came in 2nd with a 1:10.42. For Nguyen, the swim came in less than half a second off her career best of 1:09.92, which she swam at the TYR Pro Championships in July of 2023. Nwaizu, on the other hand, was even closer to her personal best of 1:10.20, which she swam in May of this year. Her 1:10.20 marks the fastest 100 breast in the country this season for 14-year-old girls.

Another young Irvine Novaquatics swimmer, Cindy Wu, 15, won the women’s 100 fly in 1:02.62. The swim marks a career best for Wu, beating out her previous top time of 1:03.35, which she swam at the LA Invite two weeks ago. She was just off the Summer Junior Nationals cut, which stands at 1:02.39.

The men’s 100 fly saw Mission Viejo Nadadores 20-year-old Josh Ang win in 54.88. He was out quick, splitting 25.28 on the opening 50, then came home in 29.60. Ang was just a hair off his personal best of 54.71.

Irvine Novaquatics 18-year-old Grace Wharton won the women’s 200 back in 2:18.66. Wharton, who will be moving to Las Vegas soon to begin her collegiate career at UNLV, won the race decisively, but was a bit off her career best of 2:16.02. She was out well, splitting 32.59 and 34.43 on the first two 50s, for a 1:07.02, but couldn’t hold the pace from that 2nd 50, and came home in 35.91 and 35.73 on the final 50s.
