Swimmers in Southern California took to the Palm Springs Swim Center earlier this month for the region’s Winter Age Group Championships, and there were a number of top performances produced.
Among those were the efforts of Irvine Novaquatics swimmer Peter Vu, who neared his lifetime best in the boys’ 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:03.53.
The 14-year-old’s showing fell just shy of his personal best of 2:03.24, set in November, which ranks him 23rd all-time in the boys’ 13-14 age group.
Vu added personal bests in the 100 back (55.62) and 200 IM (1:54.88) in Palm Springs.
Other standouts included Rose Bowl Aquatics’ 13-year-old Henry Yang, who recorded new personal bests in the boys’ 100 breast (59.66), 200 breast (2:09.41), 200 IM (2:01.65) and 400 IM (4:25.19).
12-year-old Irvine Novaquatics member Eli Siniak established seven lifetime best times, including a 1:02.90 showing in the 100 breaststroke that ranks him 83rd all-time in the boys’ 11-12 age group.
Siniak also registered PBs in the 50 free (23.89), 100 free (53.12), 50 breast (29.27), 50 fly (25.72) and 100 IM (1:00.19).
The top performer overall for the 11-12 boys was Siniak’s Irvine teammate Michael Wang, who won six gold medals, including new personal bests in the 50 free (23.27), 100 free (50.33), 100 back (57.63), 50 fly (25.46) and the 50 back (26.76) leading off the 200 medley relay.
On the girls’ side, the top performer was Irvine Novaquatics’ 13-year-old Alyssa Ton, who matched Wang with six gold medals.
Ton set new bests in the 100 free (51.86), 100 back (58.01), 200 back (2:06.81) and 200 fly (2:06.79).
