Isabella Urlando broke three conference records over the weekend to lead the Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros (SBCC) to their eighth consecutive Western State Conference (WSC) swimming & diving championship title.

Urlando, the younger sister of American Record holder and U.S. World Championship team member Luca Urlando, obliterated the conference records in the women’s 100 back, 200 back and 100 fly.

Urlando clocked a time of 54.91 to win the 100 back, and went on to go slightly faster (54.84) on the 400 medley relay to break a 26-year-old WSC record by three seconds. She also went 2:02.47 in the 200 back to break the WSC record by 10 seconds and 55.34 in the 100 fly to lower the mark by over a second.

Urlando reset her personal best times in both the 100 back and 100 fly, having previously been 55.56 and 56.43, respectively, while her lifetime best in the 200 back stands at 2:00.88 from March 2018.

Her performances earned her WSC Swim & Dive Athlete of the Year honors.

“I can attribute much of my success this season to the support of my teammates and Coaches Chuckie (Roth), Paige (Treloar-Ballard, and Pete (Snyder),” Urlando said, according to SBCC Athletics.

“Our team dynamic is incredibly positive and uplifting. Chuckie goes above and beyond and with his help I have become not only a better athlete but a better person as well. This is an incredible program that I feel very lucky to be a part of.”

In February 2021, Urlando announced her commitment to join UC Santa Barbara for the 2022-23 season. However, she never ended up racing for the Gauchos and her last competition on record came in September 2021 before her performances this season for SBCC. The Vaqueros kicked off their season in February and it will conclude in May at the CCCAA Championships.

A product of DART Swimming, Urlando is listed as a freshman on the SBCC roster.

SBCC won the title with 738 points, topping runner-up Santa Monica College by 142.

“We had so many incredible swims,” said coach Chuckie Roth. “Our success truly lies within the definition of team first. Every one of our girls poured their hearts into each swim. This was one of the most competitive WSC Championship meets.

“Santa Monica is one of the best in the state, and we only led by narrow margins. We were up by 11 after day one, and 24 on day two. However, I knew we had some big swims on the third day and the girls truly swam incredibly.”

If you move the Santa Barbara to attend SBCC you are usually planning to transfer to UCSB. Maybe some kind of eligibility issue out of high school would be my thought or just took a gap yr for personal reasons. Odd ucsb didn’t take her directly since she is fast for their team

I wonder what happened to her commitment to UCSB? especially if she’s competing at a CC in the same area.

Some very solid times. Would have lander her some top 8 finishes at the MPSF meet if she was swimming at UCSB…but sounds like she’s doing great work at the JC level.
