The men’s 50m butterfly was a fast and furious race this evening, as athletes battled it out in the semi-final at these 2022 FINA Short Course World Championships.
Among the contestants was 31-year-old Matteo Rivolta of Italy, trying to upgrade his bronze medal-worthy performance in this event from last year’s edition of this competition.
Rivolta put up a heats swim this morning of 22.32, tying Ilya Kharun of Canada for the 8th place position, comfortably into tonight’s semi-final.
However, while on the blocks to vie for the final 8, Rivolta flinched, causing the veteran to be disqualified. With that DQ, Rivolta will not have the chance to improve upon his 22.02 that landed him on the podium in Abu Dhabi.
Rivolta still has the chance to bring Italy a medal, entered in the men’s 100m fly event where he is the reigning 2021 short course world champion.
I do not understand why flinching causes a dq. It does not give an advantage to the athlete. Is it because it deactivated the reaction time mechanism?
Does he get 9th place or dq for event?
Not sure it matters but presumably he will get 16th as he was last in the semis.
