Italy Concludes 2019 Para World Championships Atop Medal Table

The seventh and final night of the 2019 World Para Swimming World Championships fittingly out-did the prior six with eight world records broken on the day.

The first record of the day came in the women’s SB6 100 breast, where China’s Daomin Liu won in 1:29.87. Great Britain’s Maisie Summers-Newton hit a Europen record with her silver medal performance, going 1:33.46, and teammate Eleanor Simmonds was third in 1:38.22.

Brock Whiston (GBR) kicked off a run of four-straight events with world records by winning the women’s SBB8 100 breast in 1:13.83, nine seconds ahead of the next-fastest finisher. Canada’s Katarina Roxon also went a new Americas record in the race, going 1:21.96.

Great Britain’s Reece Dunn won the next event, the men’s S14 100 fly in world record fashion. He took gold in 54.46, over a second faster than the prior record, and American Lawrence Sapp hit a new Americas record with his silver medal swim of 56.96.

Next up in the world record run was Russia’s Valeriia Shabalina, who took the women’s SB14 100 fly in 1:03.48. Third-place finisher Yui Lam Chan set a new Asian record at 1:06.45 and Australia’s Taylor Corry set an Oceania record at 1:06.45.

Italy’s Efrem Morelli set the fourth consecutive world record, winning the men’s SB3 50 breast in 47.49.

Shortly after, Ukrainian Andrii Trusov set a world record winning the men’s S7 50 free in 27.07. Sixth-place finisher Christian Sadie, of South Africa, set a new African record in 29.10.

Italian teenager Simone Barlaam won his fourth gold medal in four attempts this week, taking the men’s S9 50 free in a world record 24.00.

The Netherlands’ Liesette Bruinsma hit the final world record of the meet, going 5:02.19 to win the women’s S11 400 free. The second-place finisher, China’s Xiaotong Zhang, went a new Asian record at 5:16.35.

Additional continental records broken on night 7:

  • The United States’ Leanne Smith went a new Americas record in prelims of the women’s SB3 50 breast at 58.90, then went 57.24 in finals.
  • Smith broke another Americas record in the SM3 100 free, going 1:36.49.
  • Australian Matt Levy went 1:27.55 to set an Oceania record in the men’s SB6 100 breast.
  • Malaysia’s Muhammad Zuklafly went a new Asian record in the men’s S5 100 free, touching in 1:15.39.
