Italy Edges Russia In Mixed Duet Technical On Day 4 In Budapest

2017 FINA WORLD AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS – SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING

Three days into synchronized swimming at the 2017 World Championships and the Russians, as usual, had been dominant. They had gone 2-for-2 in golds so far, and appeared to be on their way to a third after qualifying 1st in the Mixed Duet Technical prelims.

However, the Italians were close behind in qualifying, and managed to pull off the win in the final.

The duo of Giorgio Minisini and Manila Flamini (90.2979) edged Russians Mikhaela Kalancha and Aleksandr Maltsev (90.2639) by just 0.0340 for gold. The two Italians move up to the top of the podium after winning bronze in this event 2 years ago, while Maltsev wins a second consecutive silver. He and his partner at the time, Daria Valitova, took 2nd in Kazan to Americans Bill May and Christina Jones.

The same three teams were on the podium as last time, as May and Kanako Spendlove scored 87.6682 for bronze.

  1. Italy (Minisini, Flamini), 90.2979
  2. Russia (Kalancha, Maltsev), 90.2639
  3. USA (May, Spendlove), 87.6682
  4. Japan (Abe, Adachi), 86.2679

Later on in the evening the Women’s Solo Free prelims took place, and to no one’s surprise it was Russian Svetlana Kolesnichenko leading the way with a score of 95.5000. Spain’s Ona Carbonell (94.1667) and the Ukraine’s Anna Voloshyna (92.8667) qualified 2nd and 3rd. That’s actually the exact same three who won the medals in the Solo Technical event, in the same order.
