Italy, Germany Win Relay Golds To Close 2016 Junior Open Water Worlds

2016 OPEN WATER JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Italy and Germany won gold medals in the relay events to close the 2016 Junior Open Water World Championships, with the former nation finishing atop the medal standings.

Italy won the 4×1.25K relay for the 14-16 age group, finishing 3 seconds ahead of Hungary. Emanuele Russo, Andrea Filadelli, Ludovica Lugli and Giulia Berton made up that team, which finished in 58:06.4.

Hungary was 58:09.1, with Akos Kalmar, Zoltan Tabi, Janka Juhasz and Fanni Kun-Szabo making up the team. Great Britain was 58:12.6 for bronze.

In the 19 & Under relay (also 4 legs of 1.25K apiece), Germany took the win in 56:06.2 with the team of Paul Hentschel, Lea Boy, Thore Bermel and Jeanette Spiwoks. That was the nation’s first medal of the meet.

Italy was second in 56:07 with the team of Nicola Roberto, Andrewa Manzi, Alisia Tettamanzi and Sophie Cavagnola. France took third in 56:19.8.

Though the 8 gold medals were evenly spread between 8 different countries (Italy and Germany were joined by Hungary, Spain, China, France, Great Britain and Russia), Italy led all nations with 4 total medals. Berton also won silver in the 14-15 girls 5K and Manzi took bronze in the boys 18-19 10K.
