Ithaca Bomber Invite Day 2

Cornell swimming and diving leads through day 2 of the Ithaca Bomber Invitational on both the men’s and women’s sides. Read on for full recaps from the competing teams.

Ithaca:

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men’s swimming and diving team remained in seventh place after day two of the Bomber Invitational on Saturday in the A&E Center Aquatics Pavilion.  Cornell remains ahead of the field, which consists of 11 teams, with 1,472 points after 30 events.

During the morning session, Ithaca took fourth place in the 200 medley relay whenAddison Hebert, Jon Husson, Jeremy Kingsley and Aaron Levin finished in 1:26.33 to earn the Bombers 52 points.

Keith Bradley would also put points on the board in the 400 individual medley after taking 18th place with a final time of 4:27.86 before Hebert posted a 14th place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 52.72.

Levin would go on to claim a top-ten finish in the 200 freestyle as the freshman secured 10th place after touching the wall in 1:46.57 and would later team up with Aidan Hartswick, Hebert and Bradley Keith in the 400 medley relay to take eighth place overall with a time of 3:33.55.

In the evening session, Keith would place 20th overall in the 100 backstroke after beating out 16 other entries with a time of 54.98 while Hartswick earned 20 points in the 100 breaststroke after finishing in ninth place in 59.86.

In the final event of the day, Levin, Hebert, Kingsley and Lucas Radouch nailed down a sixth place finish in the 800 free relay after completing the event in 7:10.16.

In the 3-meter dive, Scott Hillen‘s 433.90 points was good for seventh place overall.

The Bombers will be right back in the water at 10 a.m. on Sunday for the final day of the Bomber Invitational at the A&E Center Aquatics Pavilion.

La Salle:

Women-

ITHACA, N.Y.- The La Salle women’s swimming and diving team sits in second place after the second day of the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational.

The Explorers had four individuals finish in the top three in events on Saturday. Junior Eva Marie Østerhus won the 200 freestyle race thanks to a time of 1:52.68. She was followed closely by classmate Kaitlyn Hay who crossed in second with a time of 1:53.33. Sophomore  Rory Kearnsfinished ninth out of 66 competitors thanks to a time of 1:56.77.

Sophomore Emma Smith crossed in second place in the 400 IM race out of 32 entries. Smith swam a 4:30.43 in the event. Sophomores Hannah Elliott and Danielle Thomas also finished in the top 10 with times of 4:38.35 and 4:44.36 for seventh and ninth respectively.

Freshman Olivia DiStefano touched in second place out of 56 entries in the 100 backstroke thanks to a time of 57.75.

Elliott also turned in a strong time in the 100 butterfly event where she finished in 58.96 for a 10thplace finish out of 48 entries.

Sophomore Madeline Koelsch used a time of 1:07.10 in the 100 breaststroke to finish in eighth place out of 41 entries.

Junior Julia Mann touched in sixth place in the 200 butterfly field of 25 thanks to a time of 2:12.52.

The 800 freestyle relay team turned in the top time on the day. The team of Hay, Smith, Kearns, and Østerhus beat the competition thanks to a time of 7:30.96.

The women’s 400 medley relay team and 200 freestyle relay teams also turned in strong performances for second place finishes.

Men-

ITHACA, N.Y.- The La Salle men’s swimming and diving team had six top-five finishes on the second day of the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational on Saturday.

Freshman Aleksandar Nikolic finished in fifth place out of 56 entries in the 200 freestyle race. Nikolic turned in a time of 1:42.79 in the event. Junior Jerry Gravel finished 10th in the event thanks to a time of 1:43.43.

Gravel returned in the evening to finish fourth out of 36 entries in the 100 backstroke race. Grael used a time of 51.40 for the fourth place finish.

Senior Jonathan Cabral finished in sixth place out of 41 entries in the 100 breaststroke race. Cabral turned in a time of 58.88. Freshman Joshua Williams used a time of 59.74 to finish in eighth place in the event.

Junior Strahinja Stankovic finished in seventh place out of 51 entries in the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.84.

Freshman Jeffrey Pffanenstein had the top time of any La Salle swimmer in the 400 IM. Pffanenstein touched in tenth place with a time of 4:18.03.

Three La Salle relay teams turned in second place finishes on day two. Stankovic, Hughes, Nikolic, and Cabral used a time of 1:25.96 for second in the 200 freestyle relay. Gravel, Cabral, Stankovic, and Nikolic finished second in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:29.83. Finally, Hughes, Pffanenstein, Gravel and Nikolic touched in 6:52.31 to close out the day in second in the 800 freestyle relay.

Springfield College:

Ithaca, N.Y. – December 5, 2015 – The Springfield College women’s swimming and diving team competed in the Ithaca Invitational at the A&E Center Aquatics Pavillion on Saturday. The Pride is competing in a three day invitational against 11 teams, including a Division I program, and holds seventh place after day two with 277 points.

The most impressive performance of the evening came from Emily Medeiros (Wakefield, Mass.), as the junior claimed first place in the 100 breast in a time of 1:03.15, finishing over two seconds faster than second place.

The first session of the day began with the 200 free relay team of Haley Cordery (Berkley, Mass.), Nicole Scotto (Southbury, Conn.), Olivia Paione (Auburn, Maine), and Delaney Dyjak (Ludlow, Mass.) started off competition with seventh place finish in a time of 1:40.58.

In the 400 IMCallie Phillips (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Kassandra Lamb (Reading, Mass.) paced the Pride, as Phllips placed 10th with a time of 4:44.99 and Lamb placed 11th with a time of 4:46.61. In the 100 fly, Dyjak secured 15th place with a mark of 59.91.

The 400 medley relay of Christine Legsdin (Westminster, Mass.), Medeiros, Dyjak, and Phillips put forth a strong effort placing fourth overall in a time of 4:01.67, touching the wall .26 seconds faster than SUNY Geneseo.

In the 1 meter dive, Melanie Avdoulos (East Longmeadow, Mass.) placed sixth with a score of 362.45.

The final session of the evening began with the 200 fly and a 16th place finish from Lauren Longley (Westfield, Mass.) in a time of 2:22.15. In the nightcap, the team of Phillips, Paione, Lamb, and Coredery placed seventh in the 800 free relay in a time of 8:04.19.

Springfield competes again tomorrow morning during the final day of competition with the first event beginning at 10am.

Nazareth College:

ITHACA, N.Y. — Nazareth’s men’s swimming and diving team enjoyed a record-breaking day Saturday at the Bomber Invitational at Ithaca’s Aquatic Pavilion. The Golden Flyers broke four more school records and narrowly missed a fifth as the Golden Flyers stood in sixth place in an 11-team field that includes Division I teams Cornell and LaSalle. Cornell leads the team scoring after the second day of competition with 1,472 points. Geneseo is second with 824. Nazareth has 440 points.

The Golden Flyers broke records in three relays: the 200 free relay, the 400 medley relay and the 800 free relay. The foursome of Gannon Connors, Matt Leverich, Sean Doyle and Dan Burke swam to a seventh-place finish in the 200 free relay with a record time of 1:27.97. Later on the team of Burke, Rob Coatsworth, Alex LaPoint and Leverich finished third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:30.26. Burke, Leverich, Connors and LaPoint teamed up in the 800 to post a third-place time of 7:05.16.

LaPoint also set a school record with a fifth-place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:08.39. Burke nearly broke his own record in the 100 backstroke as he placed second with a time of :50.98.

Other top finishers included LaPoint with a 13th place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:58.83); Leverich with a 17th place in the 200 freestyle (1:47.89); Coatsworth with a 17th place in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.95) and Zachary Fink, who was 14th in 3-meter diving (285.05).

In the women’s meet, Nazareth is in ninth place with 300 points. Cornell and LaSalle are first and second respectively with 1,492.5 points and 773.5 points.

Kimberly Pedrotti had a strong showing for Nazareth in the 400-yard IM, earning an eighth-place finish with a time of 4:41.72. She also placed 13th in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.69) and swam on two productive relays. She was part of the 400 medley relay that finished eighth in 4:09.46. Elizabeth Carro, Erika Holland and Cameron Hess also competed.  Then in the 800 free relay Nazareth finished ninth with a time of 8:11.31 with Lillian Masters, Shannon O’Malley, Pedrotti and Hess.

Hess also finished 17th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.89 and the foursome of Brittany Heffler, Annamarie Policht, Kenna Hartmann and O’Malley finished 10th in the 200 free relay in 1:42.75. In 1-meter diving, Desiree Klinefinished 14th with a score of 302.20.

Shippensburg:

The Shippensburg University women’s swimming team exceled in specialty events on Saturday, especially the butterfly and backstroke flights, in completing a morning and evening timed finals session on the second day of the 2015 Bomber Invitational hosted by Ithaca College.

Sophomore Nicole Martorella improved her No. 2 ranking on SU’s all-time list for the 100-yard breaststroke, placing fourth in improving her personal best to 1:05.90. Martorella also notched a PSAC qualifier in the 400-yard individual medley (IM), swimming 4:48.91.

Senior Rikki Sargent was SU’s pacesetter in the 100-yard butterfly, swimming a splendid time of 58.99 seconds that is just .17 seconds off her collegiate best. Freshman Sidney Owens was close behind in 59.70 seconds, just eight tenths of a second off her own best.

Freshman Lauren Ellis also broke 60 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly, swimming 59.84 seconds, led a legion of Raiders that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying time in the 100-yard backstroke. Ellis swam 1:00.37 in that event, nearly cracking SU’s all-time Top 10.

Freshman Carly Alvarado was close to her season best which sits 10th all-time in the 100 backstroke, swimming 1:00.51. Freshman Tori Bingham improved her season best a second to 1:00.74, while senior Carolyn Meier tried her hand in the event and did very well – posting a time of 1:01.21.

Junior Sami Sabol posted a time of 1:02.38, while sophomore Rhyan Rodriguez returned to her signature event and achieved a PSAC cut of 1:03.15.

Sophomore Nollaig Noll paced four Raider PSAC cuts in the 200-yard freestyle, making a season debut in the event of 1:59.17. Sophomore Jeanette Welch bumped up her season PR in the event to 2:00.12, while sophomore Abbey O’Neal swam 2:00.86 and junior Kaytee Garcia touched the wall in 2:01.59.

SU achieved a 13-second season best in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Ellis, Alvarado, Bingham and Owens teamed up to swim the relay in 7:56.20.

The Raiders are in fifth place through the first two days of competition, trailing Cornell, La Salle, SUNY Geneseo and host Ithaca.

Shippensburg concludes the three-day Bomber Invitational at 10 a.m. Sunday with the fifth timed finals session. Sunday’s events include the 1,650-yard “mile” freestyle, the 100-yard IM, the 100-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke, the 200-yard breaststroke, and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
