Ithaca Bomber Invite Day 3

The Cornell women won their 5th straight title at the Ithaca Bomber Invite this weekend, while the Cornell men also took home a victory. Read on for recaps from the competing teams.

Ithaca:

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men’s swimming and diving team placed seventh overall out of 11 teams after 44 events at the fifth annual Bomber Invitational on Sunday at the A&E Center Aquatics Pavilion.  Cornell University, which competes at the Division I level, won the three-day meet with 2,085 points.  SUNY Geneseo earned runner-up honors while La Salle, which also takes on a Division I schedule, finished third.

The Bombers picked up three top-ten finishes in the 1650 free after Keith Dougherty, Justin Barwick and Marshall Hendlin all finished within 20 seconds of each other for eight, ninth and 10th place, respectively.

Ithaca continued its strong showing in the 100-yard individual medley when Addison Hebert finished in sixth place with a time of 53.83 for 23.5 points.  Aidan Hartswick also competed in the event, placing 16th overall.

Aaron Levin continued to show his speed in the 100 free as the freshman sprinted to an eighth place finish after touching the wall in 47.16 which was less than two seconds behind the eventual winner.

Bradley Keith took home 18th place in the 200-yard backstroke after beating out 15 other swimmers with a time of 1:59.94 while in the breaststroke, James Bowe picked up another top-ten finish after completing the 200-yard event in 2:11.86.

Ithaca saved its best finish for the last event of the three-day meet as the team of Jeremy Kingsley, Hebert, Hartswick and Levin combined to post a fifth place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:11.10, which was faster than 32 other entries.

The Bombers are off until January 16 when they return to competition at the Henry Kumpf Invitational hosted by R.P.I. in Troy.

Cornell:

ITHACA, N.Y. – For the fifth straight year, the Cornell women’s swimming and diving team dominated the field and took home the team title at the Ithaca College Bomber Invite on Sunday afternoon at the Athletics and Events Center. The Big Red ended the three-day meet with 1987.5 points, easily outdistancing second place La Salle (1141.5) in the 11-team field.

The Big Red won all five relays and Jenna Immormino took home three individual titles (50 free, 100 free, 100 fly) to highlight the weekend. Currie Murch Elliot (400 IM, 1650 Free),Jennifer Zhang (200 IM, 200 fly) and Helen Hsu (100 and 200 back) also won multiple events, with Hannah Bollinger claiming the individual title in the 500 free.

Springfield College:

Ithaca, N.Y. – December 6, 2015 – The Springfield College women’s swimming and diving team completed the final day of the three day Ithaca Invitational, hosted by Ithaca College, on Sunday afternoon. The Pride competed against 11 teams at the A&E Center Aquatics Pavilion.

During the final day of competition, Springfield took part in six events, highlighted by a dominant performance from Emily Medeiros (Wakefield, Mass.). The junior captured a first place finish in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:19.06 and finished over two seconds faster than her other competitors, including Division 1 swimmers from Cornell University.

The events began with the 1650 free and a 16th place finish for Kassandra Lamb (Reading, Mass.) in a time of 18:40.15. Coming in next for Springfield was Abigail Fagerholm (Sandy Hook, Conn) in 19th place with a time of 19:03.32 while Lauren Longley (Westfield, Mass.) followed closely in 20th place with a time of 9.04.09.

In the 100 free, Delaney Dyjak (Ludlow, Mass.) touched the wall in 53.79 to claim 12th place. Dyjak also competed in the 50 free, placing 16th with a time of 24.92.

Christine Legsdin (Westminster, Mass.) and Allison Heschle (Brick, N.J.) finished the 200 backstroke in 2:18.25 and 2:18.94, respectively.
Following the Pride’s top-finisher Medeiros in the 200 breaststroke was Alyssa Carle (Franklin, Mass.) and Christine Shea (Peabody, Mass.). Carle placed 11st in 2:30.20, while Shea placed 17th with a time of 2:34.71. 
 
Closing out the invitational was the 400 free relay team of Nicole Scotto (Southbury, Conn.), Callie Phillips (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Olivia Paione (Auburn, Maine), and Dyjak, finishing in seventh place in a time of 3:37.60.  

Springfield placed seventh out of 11 teams with a total of 598 points. Cornell University, which competes at the Division 1 level, won the event with 2060.5 points, while La Salle University claimed second with 1204.5 points and SUNY Geneseo rounded out the top three with 999.5 points.

The Pride will return to action next Saturday in a dual meet against Middlebury College with events beginning at 1pm.

Nazareth College:

ITHACA, N.Y. — Nazareth’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams continued their strong showings Sunday as competition concluded at the Bomber Invitational at Ithaca’s Aquatic Pavilion. Nazareth’s women’s team inched up to eighth place in the 11-team field with 491 points. Division I Cornell was first with 2060.5 points, followed by LaSalle with 1204.5 points. In the men’s meet, Nazareth set another school record and finished in sixth place with 654 points. Cornell and Geneseo finished 1-2 with 2085 and 1138 points respectively.

Junior Cameron Hess paced the women’s team with a fourth-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:34.20. Senior Kimberly Pedrotti finished ninth in the same race (18:12.31) and junior Lillian Masters finished 11th (18:16.90). Freshman Kelsey Jesaitis was 22nd (19:24.31).

Hess also anchored Nazareth’s 400 free relay that finished in 10th place with a time of 3:46.03. Masters also competed in that event along with freshman Annamarie Policht and Kenna Hartmann. Other top finishers included sophomoreErika Holland, who was ninth in the 100-yard IM (1:03.85) and freshman Brittany Heffler, who was 11th in the same race (1:04.89). Pedrotti was ninth in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.92) and Heffler was 16th (2:34.11).

Nazareth’s men’s team set their sixth school record of the invitational Sunday as the 400-yard free relay team of Alex LaPoint, Matt Leverich, Gannon Connors and Dan Burke placed seventh with a time of 3:12.69.

LaPoint was close to a school record in the 200 breaststroke as he placed fifth with a time of 2:09.12. Freshman Rob Coatsworth was 15th in 2:15.22.

Burke continued his strong swimming with a fourthh-place finish in the 200 backstroke, narrowly missing his own school record with a time of 1:51.22. Connors also swam and finished 16th with a time of 1:59.07.

Nazareth finished 4-5-6 in the 1,650 freestyle with freshman Robert Draper and sophomores Andrew Battaglia andPhilip Nanula. Draper’s time of 16:34.79 was less than two seconds off the school record orf 16:33.21 set by Battaglia last season.

The Golden Flyers are idle until Jan. 16 when they visit the University of Rochester at 1 p.m.
