INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP Department of Athletics announced a plan for its coaches and staff to give back through the University’s athletic fund.

“The global health pandemic has had a significant impact on athletics at IUP,” said Todd Garzarelli, Director of Athletics. “We care so deeply about our student-athletes and their success. As we navigate through these challenging times, this initiative will go a long way in helping them realize their goals.”

Athletic Department leadership, coaches and administrators collectively agreed to give up to five percent of their summer salary to reinvest in their programs and the overall student-athlete experience.

The idea was a success as 100 percent of head coaches, along with Garzarelli and other department staff members, participated in the program.

“I am honored to work with and be a part of this great Crimson Hawk Family,” said Chris Villa, IUP head swim coach and vice president of the APSCUF coaches’ union. “This initiative shows tremendous dedication to each other, the department and university and most importantly to the student-athletes.”

“I want to thank our University leadership and the Foundation for IUP for supporting this initiative,” said Garzarelli. “I am especially grateful for leadership gifts from the vice presidents for students affairs and university advancement. I am proud of our coaches and staff for their response and willingness to contribute to the financial health of our department and thank them for their commitment to our student-athletes and the mission of IUP athletics.”
