INDIANAPOLIS – The men’s and women’s swim team defeated the Valparaiso Beacons in Friday’s dual meet at the IU Natatorium. The men’s team took down the Beacons by a score of 127-73 while the women’s team won 127-74. The Jags collected points on half of their races with the rest of the swims going under exhibition.
The Jags started the meet with the 200 medley relay. IUPUI’s “A” relay team with Emmaleigh Zietlow, Kaylee Dexter, Lillian Brandt and Kate Larson took first place with a time of 1:48.71. The men’s relay team of Keiran Rahmaan, Logan Kelly, Kevin Burke and Spencer Jyawook earned first with a time of 1:30.57.
After the dominate start, freshman Samantha Lee earned first-place in the women’s 1000 free with a time of 10:54.02. Freshman Youssef Magdy followed with a first-place finish in the men’s 1000 free with a time of 9:33.69.
Zietlow earned another first-place finish in the 200 free with a time 1:53.82 with Madelyn Weber coming in second with a time of 1:58.95. Nathan Rariden took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.46 while Luca Eckert collected an official second-place finish with a time of 1:45.60.
In the 50 free, Tori Barnet earned first with a time of 24.79 while Burke took first on the men’s side with a time of 20.67. The Jaguars’ freshman continued to shine with Victoria Surdyka taking first in the women’s 200 IM with a time of 2:13.27. Senior Ben Kimmel finished first for the men in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.47.
Priscilla Zavala earned first in the women’s 100 fly with a time of 59.30 while Jyawook finished with a time of 48.04 to earn first in the men’s 100 fly. With a time of 53.41, Brandt earned first in the 100 free followed by Rariden earning his second first-place finish of the meet with a time of 46.64 in the men’s 100 free.
Barnet earned her second first-place finish with a time of 1:00.55 in the women’s 100 back followed by Jack Gallob taking first in the men’s 100 back with a time of 50.56.
Zietlow collected another first-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 5:03.45, which was almost 17 second faster than the second-place finisher. Magdy collected his second first-place finish in the men’s 500 free with a time of 4:38.43, ten seconds faster than his nearest competitor.
Surdyka collected another first place finish with a top time of 1:07.89 in the women’s 100 breast while Logan Kelly dominated in the men’s 100 breast with a time of 55.26.
The Jags finished out the meet with the 200 free relay. The women’s “A” relay team of Brandt, Zavala, Barnet and Hannah Barton finished in first with a time of 1:39.61. The men’s “A” team of Jyawook, Burke, Kimmel and Nick Cavanah earned first with a top time of 1:23.55.
IUPUI had a clean sweep as they finished in first for every event defeating the Beacons 127 to 73 for the men’s competition and 127 to 74 on the women’s side. The Jags will next travel to the Indiana Intercolliegates hosted by the Purdue Boilermakers next weekend, Saturday, October 21 at 12:00 PM.

Taking advantage of the University being on fall break, the Valpo men’s and women’s swimming teams took to the pool for a pair of road meets this weekend. The Beacons competed first at IUPUI in a dual meet on Friday afternoon before turning around for a tri-meet at Evansville and against Southern Indiana on Saturday afternoon.
How It Happened – IUPUI
- Two swimmers on the women’s side led the Beacons in a pair of events apiece. Freshman Avery Ball (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) paced Valpo in the 200 IM (2:19.17) and the 100 back (1:01.90), finishing second in the latter event.
- Junior Sara Strauss (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) touched the wall first for the Beacons in both the 100 free (55.36) and the 100 breast (1:09.59).
- Valpo’s 200 free relay squad of freshman Sophie Schoch (Medina, Ohio/Medina), junior Haley Hume (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette), freshman Avah Watson (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger) and freshman Faith Bargwell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Rockford) posted a second-place finish with a time of 1:43.23.
- On the men’s side against the Jaguars, sophomore Dathan Wolf (Columbus, Ind./Columbus East) led the Valpo contingent in the 50 free (22.86) and the 100 back (55.48).
- Sophomore Jackson Oostman (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) paced the Beacons versus IUPUI in the 200 IM (1:56.06) while also leading off both of Valpo’s relay squads.
- Final scores were 127-74 on the women’s side and 127-73 on the men’s side, both in favor of IUPUI.
