The 2016 U.S. Winter Nationals did not result in a large showing of NCAA ‘A’ cuts, but the Big Ten was king nonetheless over the weekend in Atlanta. Both Vini Lanza of Indiana and Brooke Zeiger put together strong weekends to come out with two ‘A’ cuts each. With the four ‘A’ cuts by the pair, they came away with a combined three wins, as well.
Lanza, a sophomore from Brazil, raced to a 2nd place finish behind Tom Shields in the 100 fly. Shields, of course, smashed American, U.S. Open, and meet records with an insane 43.84 for the national title. Lanza, though, was behind him in 45.56 to slip under the ‘A’ cut. In the 200 fly, Lanza won the national title with a 1:41.34, getting his second NCAA automatic qualifying time of the meet.
Zeiger, meanwhile, was on fire in the distance events. She notched lifetime bests in both the 400 IM (4:02.71) and 1650 free (15:44.00), garnering ‘A’ cuts and winning national titles in both races. In the mile, Zeiger actually broke the Big Ten record outright.
While she’s technically sitting out the season this year, Miranda Tucker put up an ‘A’ cut of her own. She won’t swim in NCAA competition this year due to an intra-conference transfer from Indiana to Michigan, but she posted a 58.95 to take 3rd in the 100 breast and get under the ‘A’ cut there. Tucker was also very close to the ‘A’ cut in the 200 breast, and her strong swims this weekend should make Michigan very excited for next fall, when she’ll get to compete in the NCAA once again.
