Adding his name to an impressive list that also includes Henry Schutte, Jack Walker, and Max Edwards, Wexford, Pennsylvania’s Jack Wright has announced his intention to swim for the University of Virginia Cavaliers beginning in the fall of 2019.
Wright, primarily a 50-100-200 sprint freestyler, swims for North Allegheny High School and Allegheny North Swim Club. At the PIAA Boys 3A Swimming & Diving Championships in March, he won the 200 free (1:34.77), was runner-up in the 100 free (43.56) and led off two PIAA record-breaking relays for North Allegheny: 4×50 free and 4×100 free. The following year he was third and fourth with 44.67 and 1:37.77.
Wright was a member of the North Allegheny quartets that broke a pile of national high school and age group relay records over the last 2 years, including most spectacularly at the 2018 PIAA State Meet in March. the 400 free relay at Winter Juniors in March. There they swam a 2:53.81 that was not only a National Public High School Record, but was also faster than Bolles’ legendary private school record. Swimming for his club team, Allegheny North Swim Club, he also contributed to a meet record in the 400m free relay at the 2017 NCSA Summer Swimming Championships. When will top 20 list of men’s and women’s high school swimmers for 2019 come out?
Schutte, Wright, Walker, Grender, Edwards, among others to come? All probable sub 20 50 swimmers and their 100s should go down too. Are we seeing NC State part 2 to challenge the Wolfpack in the ACC?
Yupppp!!!
NC State got a commit from Noah Bowers. Top swimmer in Virginia. Looks like the battle between the two will be great in a couple years.
According to the rankings here, Sean Conway (#8) is higher ranked and also from VA. So maybe they got the 2nd best??
Broad sweeping generalization, but swimmers skew higher in academic success at the elite level, and the schools they choose matters with swimming and learning and their future in mind. UVA is a fine choice if you can make the cut swimmingly and academically.
Top 3 public school for past 23 years (with most of that time being THE top public school. No brainer!!! Go Hoos
The usual top 3 public schools are Cal, Michigan, and UVA — terrific swimming to go along with terrific state schools
Another big get – lots of talent on the way to C-ville I’m the next few years. Should make the ACC very exciting
Congrats Jack!!! You made a great pick! Can’t wait to see great things happen for you at UVA!
Jeez they will be really good next year. Hope they improve more at NCAAs
This is the class of 2019- won’t be there until fall of 2019. Still looking like a good class.
